Different COEs for Singaporeans and foreigners?

It is only an assumption that these ministers can perform well in a private sector job.

Regarding the logic on corruption vs high pay. By the very same logic, frauds/conman/criminals are not evil, they are just underpaid.

Politics and Business is the same, that is why U often see general from military being hired as CEO.

Are you able to answer me Which is tougher to manage?
Apple or Singapore?

:ehhh: Military Generals are not Politician btw. and frankly speaking, I dun really see alot of military generals being hired as CEO globally.. anyway, running a country is totally different from running a company..

Do people want to see a day when salaries of ministers are low, but hide millions of dollars at home in corruption like our neighbors?
Do we want to end up being corrupted like our neighbors? If no, why the complain..

So if dun pay them millions, they will become corrupt?

So to prevent them from hiding millions of dollars at home, we give them millions of dollars officially?

:D .. kind of confusing hor.... main different is those hiding the $$$ in their pillow type are subjected to prosecution for their greed if discovered. The latter is free to help himself....

Although most company are focussed on their profit/loss accounts, that's expected .... while many still have attention spared on the work life balance of their employee, that's admired.

Country to solely focus on economic growth with little concern on its citizen plight and its leaders' remuneration is 100x that of the national average... that's PAP, coz they relate their income based on top business executives pay.... they did not relate it to comparative government....

Hoks, don't grow white hairs pondering over it... I'm sure you can distinguish the differences....

Re: Different COEs for Singaporeans and foreigners?

I really hope you guys will stop opposing minister pay rises when blackcookie and kenntona vote me in.

There is one change I will do if I am the transport minister. I will tweak ARF, COE and road tax such that family sedans like corolla will cost the same as ferrari and porsche. Our problem is with absolute number of cars on our roads being used today. Not their cc, bhp, body shape. Every car's footprint is not far away from a common standard.

So, if we're going to make car buying prohibitive to be in line with our small country and scarce resources, why not make every toyota a porsche in the process. If they all cost the same you can buy based on how much you want to budget running costs and servicing. And again, make singapore world famous in the process.

on boh.

Re: Different COEs for Singaporeans and foreigners?

This remind me of the era where old junks were still running on the roads but many newer good car got scrapped at 3 years old due to prevailing COEs prices...I wrote to LTA and told those arse head why dont allow the newer cars to be swapped with those junks at a fee and got a std %^%$%^& reply.

 would love to but cant see that happening bro.. there is this vast difference in cost of toyota and cost of maserati.. so in your scenario, no matter how much you tweak the ARF, there is no way to bring down the cost of a maserati to that of a toyota.. so in the end, all toyota will ended up being priced the same as maserati.

Re: Different COEs for Singaporeans and foreigners?

Guys, I believe there's a lack of communcation between the ministries. Yesterday, at the SDP rally, Tan Jee Say ex princial private sec for Goh Chock Tong said that in Cabinet meetings, it is often just a dialogue between father and son and sometimes monologue by father himself.

The following is an example (disclaimer: it is just a analysis done by myself and I do not have any substantiating evidence!):

I think in 2006, our govt had approved the construction of the 2 IRs. As they were massive projects, all the resources, construction companies, equipment materials, workers were concentrated on these 2 projects. I was at that time researching quite abit into the construction industry and as we all know, Koh Bros, Chip Eng Seng, Lian Beng, Tat Hong, Yong Nam etc... were busy focusing on it. I remembered the spot rate for cranes quoted by Tat Hong sky-rocketed. I think it is quite obvious if u go down to marina or sentosa and start counting the cranes, you would know what I mean. This led to lesser resources to build our HDB, or it is probably very costly to built. The shortage of sand and rising steel prices did not help things.

Even though the construction of HDBs was drastically reduced from 2007-2009, the govt had allowed huge influx of foreigners and also giving away PRships. I am not sure if they had anticipated this, but with hundreds of thousands of foreign imports, there would be lack of housing supply. Hence, driving resale prices higher. I believe, the transport ministry also could not increase their road and public transport structure in the short run, so leading to congestion on our roads as well as public transport.

I think the influx of foreigners have driven up housing and car cost considerably. If the govt had not seen this coming, the least they should do is charge premium for foreigners/PRs and for COE, there should be different quota set aside for Citizens and non locals.
