Creaking 320i

Hi All,

My 2 year 4 month old 320i has started creaking when going over humps. Strangely enough, it happens occassionally. Just got back from lunch this afternoon and it didn't creak at all going over humps. But it was creaking yesterday. :verysad:

Also noticed that when the car is parked (gear in park and handbrake up), the car also creaks when getting out / in. Ok, I am not the lightest guy but should it creak? It is starting to get annoying.

What could be wrong? Suspension? :huhhuh:

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Maybe its e bushing of the suspension tat giving off tat noise. You can drop by yur trustworthly workshop to have it inspected & maybe apply some greese to it.

Cheers ~~ :)

Thanks tomace! As long as it is nothing serious.

Will take it in one of these days.

Appreciate the advice.

Since your car is still under warranty, send it to PML to resolve. If it is not the suspension, the sound may comes from the doors and PML will apply the "friction tape " at the window trim. If it is still under warranty , they do not charge you anything. I did my about 9 months ago, so far the sound has not return, the only snag is PML service is very slow.

Thanks for that, ed6141!

I'd rather take my car in to PML than an external workshop, especially since it is still under warranty, but as you've correctly pointed out - PML service is very slow.

I recall they kept my car for 3 days in September last year just to replace the faulty USB module. I suffered a serious case of car withdrawal syndrome then!

I'll probably bring it in to a regular workshop for a check. If it is a serious problem, I'll bring it back to PML.

Thanks again!

Re: Creaking 320i

Creaks are normal. The chassis is stiffer than plastic parts can take.

Re: Creaking 320i

where is exactly the location of the creaks? I used to have creaking sound whenever go over road bumps. Sent back to pml for 2 days and they managed to identify the problem and replaced the broken clip.

anyway creaking sounds starting to come out from my 9 mths old passenger side window and driver seat.... should be the hard rubber and plastic... already give up and somehow more or less got used of the creaks.... just blast your music a bit and enjoy your ride..

Re: Creaking 320i

I think it's normal for the car to creak when the handbrake is up and are not light .......

Thanks for the input, Davidtch. The creaks started slightly over a month ago and after servicing at PML. They did change the front discs as they said it was slightly worn and warped.

I can't remember if it was immediately after or later but the creaks got quite noticible when going over humps a few weeks ago.

Oddly enough, they've disappeared and I've not heard the car creak for about a week now.

I'll keep monitoring. Thank you!

Hi Red_Bean_Bun, thanks for responding. I've never had a car creak when handbrake is up. This has been a problem since the car turned 1.5 years old. Before that, it was fine. Never had the problem with any of my previous rides.

I'm heavier now, I guess.

Sounds (pun not intended) like I need to upgrade my in-car audio system. 12" subs should do the trick. :lol2:

The creak seems to be coming from the under carriage. My suspicion is the suspension / springs. But as mentioned to davidtch earlier, the creak seems to have disappeared. No creaking for about a week now. Silence is definitely golden.

Thanks for replying, bro!

Re: Creaking 320i

Creaks happened to mine only car is driven in heavy rain. Definitely suspension problem.

What's this "friction tape" ? seems like my ride's windows are also making creaking sounds when i go over humps.

Re: Creaking 320i

When you send the car for svc they'll haul the car up and during that process some parts of your shocks that are usually not exposed become exposed to air and your springs also may also shift (correct me if i'm wrong) abit due to the lack of pressure. When they put your car back down you may have creaks or grinding noises when going over humps or bumpy surfaces -- especially if your car has been hauled up for quite a long period of time. Happened to me once. But after a few weeks of driving the springs will seat back in place and the exposed parts of the shocks will be "cleaned up" by the constant up and down motion and the creaks will start to go away.

The creaking noise from the windows is actually the door rubber seals, not the windows. Under warranty go get the friction tape from PML... otherwise just use the rubber dressing and spray on the rubber around the door. I use a paintbrush for precise application :p

Re: Creaking 320i

Another source of noise in the E90 cabin is the seat belt catch. The friction between the plastic catch and the leather seat produces a squeaking noise every time I drive over uneven roads. I bought a padded seat belt sleeve to wrap over the plastic catch and the irritating squeaking noise was gone for good.
