Coolant Leak..

Hi guyz,

Just topped up my coolant this morning after prompt by the error sign, (approx. 700ml reaching min. level) which is the 2nd time within a month.

Went to regular WS to check, cannot find any signs of leakage, small leak difficult to trace.. Had my water pump replaced last year & unlikely is radiator as it normally a will have pretty obvious signs of leakage. WS suspect it's from the hole on the coolant box use for releasing the gas while topping of coolant..

Anyone encounter similar issue, some advise pls..... :(

TIA

Re: Coolant Leak..

I have same issue, every 2 days check will notice a small drop in amount of coolant. Probably a slow leak somewhere. Resort to carrying bottles of distilled water in my boot and a fire extinguisher in the passenger side seat. =[

Re: Coolant Leak..

I have the same problem. Headache. Problem solve by R2D... But wish your problem not as serious as mine.

Wah, so serious.. gotta resort to fire extinguisher..??

Distilled water better? WS could not trace the location of leakage too huh...

Another serious problem.... what happened to yours??

Re: Coolant Leak..

Get your WS to do a pressure test on the cooling system, and see where the leak is from.

They have to raise the car to check from underneath (not on top).

I replaced a valve cover / seal on the inside cylinder block near the firewall, that had a slow leak that was hard to find until WS did the above. No visible sign or water puddle below. What's more it leaks only when engine is on.

Hope you find the problem area soon as cooling problems can be nasty (engine overheat)

WS did hoist up the car to check, but no visible sign of leakage. Can we do a pressure test for the cooling system, does the WS require specific equipment to do that?

Where exactly is the valve/cover seal you mention, can see when car hoist up?

Thanks.

Re: Coolant Leak..

During pressure testing, the WS will remove your expansion tank cap and fit it with a cooling pressure testing device. This pressure tester actually measures the cooling system when your engine is running and will show if there's a leak somewhere.

See coolant pressure testing :
http://www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/tec..._Leak_Test/WATER-Cooling_System_Leak_Test.htm

They need to look from underneath esp for those slow leaks, that does not drip but evaporate when it hits the hot engine block.

I did some searching and this seems to be the part I changed. It's called (cylinder end) cap with shaft seal that has a gasket inside that's gone bad or harden over time. The part is cheap but they took like more than an hour to replace this as it's located directly on the engine block (all the way inside).

Refer to item #7 in this diagram, ie.
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=GN63&mospid=47785&btnr=11_3251&hg=11&fg=10

FYR I fixed this at M&Q tampines, after I tried a few WS that can't even locate the leak.
Your results may vary as your car may be leaking in another location.

Thanks a lot for your valuable info & effort to search for something that you don't actually need to, very much appreciated!!

Cheers.

Re: Coolant Leak..

No worries bro. It's quite fast to dig this up as I have been googling for some other parts as well.

Now my ride also kena low coolant warning....just serviced the car about a month back.

Suddenly so many such cases surfacing it seems... Vehicle catching fire is almost a daily affair these days

Sending down to MA tomo. Hopefully they can detect the issue.

Please post update after visiting MA if possible.

(see whether could be same problem bo..)

Thanks.

Re: Coolant Leak..

Mohan long time...

Mine burst at 30 k n 60 k respectively ....

Usually for 335 is out of the blue no warning type...

Munich changes parts which have problems.

Suggest you press to change the entire system if not some other part will have issues...

Thanks.

Drive down to MA earlier...as soon as my SE opened the bonnet, we could hear leaking noise. Apparently the housing has burst!

As Ken mentioned, SE said he will change the part but need to order first.

Ken, thanks for your heads up. Will call SE tomo to check if he is changing the entire system or just the affected part. Very likely I think it will be the latter.

Update again soon.

Re: Coolant Leak..

I just dun understand why such stuffs will burst or leak with every 30000 or so ?

Is it just me n my driving style or its normal ?

Mind sharing how old is your car?

Re: Coolant Leak..

Bro Ken, since my car also kena same problem, guess it's not related to driving style..

If I'm not mistaken, both our cars are around the same batch of production.

Re: Coolant Leak..

My is 2.5 yrs 61k mileage now... Hehehe ...

Our car is Charge pipe, Radiator ... brake sound ...

It's the reliability of the parts

Re: Coolant Leak..
