Convenient access

According to my car's user manual, one should actually insert the key in the lock only "in exceptional circumstances" if you have "convenient access". Question: I know that if you *don't* have convenient access, then you have to insert the key regularly so that it will re-charge. But does the above mean that you should *not* do so if you have convenient access? ie what I am asking is: is the battery non-rechargeable if you have "convenient access"?

I don't really know what CA is good for, but it is a lot of fun.

Warning: I will probably have a lot more foolish questions like this....

Re: Convenient access

CA is for convenience sake. Guess the book is trying to tell us that u don't have to worry about inserting the key into the slot everytime!

I, for one, has never inserted the key into the slot UNLESS I wanted the key to remember some settings that I have changed. Rest of the time its in my pocket. Touch door handle, open door, step brake, press START, and off I go!

Re: Convenient access

I think the battery is non-rechargable. Currently I don't put it into the slot unless i have no pockets or if the car gives me a message "key not detected in the car" (or something along those lines).

ps. I've once left the key in the trunk and closed it and it didn't lock... thank god for that! phew!

That is correct. The Key Fob doesn't have a rechargeable battery. Batt lifetime is estimated to be about 2yrs. I wonder if it is covered under warranty.

You cannot lock your trunk if your key fob is in the truck. Tried it :)

Here are some photos of the Key Fob holder that hopefully is available at PML. If not, the part number is: 51 21 0 414 778.

That's ok. It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both. Macchiavelli say one.:)

Re: Convenient access

Hey, Azrielsc, that key fob looks good. But that isn't an E92 key.

You can have a leather pouch custom-made to exactly the size of your key in the leather shop in the basement of Heeren. About $60 depending on the quality of the leather. Not as silly as it sounds, because the key is after all plastic, and it will get battered and beaten very soon otherwise.

Thought that leather pouch is for all E9X keyfob. Will pop by PML and see what they say though!

Thanks for the heads-up on the customisable leather pouch at Heeren!

Re: Convenient access

You're welcome. If you decide to get it done at Heeren, ask the guy there to offer a discount to all members of this group! He does a good job but $60 is a bit steep...

Re: Convenient access

for whatever it's worth, I have 2 beautiful leather key fob holders but I have NEVER used them. Passed them all to the new buyer and he never used them. And the keyfob never scratched even though it's always mixed with coins. Consider whether you'll use it first, it's worth the price of half a tank of gas.

Re: Convenient access

Bah.... Went to PML, no leather pouches for the Key Fob... No accessories for the E92 too...

Re: Convenient access

Sam, I have checked with PML (ALexandra) and they do indeed have the key pouch.

Was told it's $20ish for the E90..... Whoever told u they don't have it ?

Re: Convenient access

Cool, you've managed to get a leather key cover for the E90 key?

I asked PML Alexandra's parts counter yesterday and they said its still on order and will only be avaliable in a few weeks time. Is yours the same?
