gear box replacement are darn expensive..........anyone here had any transmission problems?
do u guys experience any gear knocking when engaging reverse or when moving off u can feel the gear change? is this normal or this is a sign of wearing out transmission?

wa I read thru a few postings on that website and it sounds very scary.....wonder if its really true. Cos I rack up 60K km per year, means I would encounter such transmission problems in my 2nd year of ownership? wow....better not drive so muc already.....

hey you changed from the super reliable FD1/2 to BMW ..... and you wanna `not drive' to save the transmission? C'mon .... let it break and then you can form an honest opinion... no babying of the car.
It's not BMW's fault, it's the gearbox supplier, mostly ZF.

I had a 5 Series (E39) 09/2001, driven for 4 yrs no problem, only change 1 light bulb during parts warranty period but in the 4th yr onward, gearbox at about 120Kkm start to gives me problem with some telltale sign like the lower gear sometime not engaging and experience some gear slips that gives some jerky and knocking sound on & off, after mths of driving getting worse when to PML and they told me cost ard $9 to 10K for a new gearbox exclude labour (damn f****** ex man), I told myself this will be my last BMW, took the car to outside workshop to temporally repair cost me $1,800 drive for few mths and look for a new car and test drove other brand marques but end up another 5 Series (E60) with this present ride it’s my 3rd 5 Series from E34 to E60. Well, I guess it’s still the ultimate driving machine.
I had to deregister and export the E39 before the “Transmission failure” light come out, if it does the whole system will shut down and u can’t even drive, sell or export the car, u only can scrap or replace a new gearbox and drive another few yrs.
At 120Kkm, gearbox start to give problem is really pre-mature, I heard of some 5 Series can last up to 200Kkm. Now I begin to worry for my present car gearbox…good news is; I heard it can be repair at $3K to 4K for E60 but not at PML. At PML they only change the gearbox at $8k to 10k exclude labour.

just find the gear change of the E90 isnt smooth....rather jerky actually. Worse when on DS mode.
