Comparing Petrols

Has anyone done a comparison of the different types of petrol we have in Singapore as to which gives the most power/torque? There is an article in the latest EVO magazine and the results are quite surprising. Some 95 octane perform as well as 97/98 octane on a Golf GTi. But on the M5, there was hardly any difference! They also concluded that the "freshness" of the petrol is the most important, so go to the most busy station for your next fill-up!

Re: Comparing Petrols

as well as the most important tip:
If your car feels smoother running on a certain fuel, then it's probably best to stick with that brand

Re: Comparing Petrols

My personal preference is follow:

a) Mobil - better performance
b) Shell - longer distance
c) Caltex - seldom try
d) SPC - don't even think of it. Tried and regret.

Re: Comparing Petrols

Read the article also and seems like fresh petrol is the way to go...........

Tomorrow i will start pumping from Bukit Timah stations ...kekekekk :)

Wow ! Everyday I am learning new things in this forum :)

I though Foods and Fruits need to be fresh and now even need fresh petrol.

Ha Ha !

Re: Comparing Petrols

Hi Guys,

Brands of Petrol has NO significant effect on power output in cars, it's the Octane number. A 98 Octane number would obviously fire up your engine much better than a petrol with 92 Octane number. It's the cost factor.

Re: Comparing Petrols

that's not exactly true.... if ur comparing 98 and 92 maybe, but 98 and 95, if u read the article, does not have significant difference. And the different brands DO make a difference

Re: Comparing Petrols

I think it's quite subjective...It depends on the engine and the driver. Especially the older models without knock sensors wont be able to fully exploit RON 98 if the ECU is set to run on RON 95 or 92. Remember my ex-Alfa 75 has jumpers in the ECU board where you can set the RON...dat much for the engine mgmt systems!

For the driver, deppends on how involving the driver is. Those less enthusiastic may not notice the appreciable difference. On the 318iS, I noticed a the engine is smoother and more eager...maybe more mellow too on RON98 compared to RON95.

Cheers

Re: Comparing Petrols

OK here are some facts.

1 If an engine is not rated for 98RON it is an utter waste of money to pump 98RON.
2 Similarly if an engine is rated for 98RON ONLY, u will get poor perfromance and mileage if u use anything less.
3 Now the law requires that the RON is no less then 96 if the petrol company is advertising 98RON petrol. So there will be times when a 95 RON (full octane) will perfrom just as good or better then a low 98RON.

Re: Comparing Petrols

Juz to check does anyone one here drivin a E46 318I valvetronic pumps 95RON?
Is it safe to do so?
