Cold start

Happens all the time. That's why I prefer to warm the car up for about 5 to 8 minutes before moving off. There was a thread on warming up that touches on this topic.

bmw also prefer you to drive away asap so that your cat converter can be up to temp sooner, so you'll pollute the environment less.
