COE Trend

For those of you who have bought cars for > 10 years, what are your thoughts on the COE prices? Will it continue to rise, or will it drop in 5 years when all the 2005-2010 cars get deregistered?

Or would the sudden surge in people buying new cars after selling their old cars actually cause the prices to go up even further?

Re: COE Trend

i think if you notice, the trend for COE is slowly going down. but very little. so hopefully it will go down more.

Re: COE Trend

One thing I can say for sure is when you get a brand new car at the current COE levels, chances of you selling them, say 3 year's time, in the open market is slim. Most high COE cars will get deregistered. Quite sad really.

Re: COE Trend

Hi All,

based on the movements i feel that the COE prices will not change much....fluctuating between 56K-50K.....it was at a high of 70K end of 2010...and for CatB....it has not touched the 50K mark since Jan2011. Some speculated that after the GE the COE will drop....but doesn't seem like it. This is my humble opinion.

Hmm I don't get this, follow me through this thought process please.

If the current high COE cars are sold 3-4 years later, won't they be resold in the 2nd hand market IF the COE prices remain? Why would they be deregistered (for export, I presume)?

Re: COE Trend

I say it will stay around that level. Garmen will control car population and improve public transport. I don't like high car prices but unless the infrastructure improves I honestly don't think our island can cope with previous rates of increases. That was a major cockup in my opinion.

Re: COE Trend

i think it should stay ard current level until Aug where they review the COE quota...maybe move up to 60~65k approaching Aug if got edgy dealers who fear reduction in COE quota post Aug...

Re: COE Trend

Sadly, I think the days of cheaper COEs are gone. Current levels or higher will be the norm for now on.

If the prices of Cat B and Open categories stay at current level for the next 3 years, then there is little or no impact to the second hand resale market. I do not think they will stay high for the next 3 years.

So, when COEs are cheaper ($15-20K level) say in 3 year's time, what will you buy? A high COE second hand car or a brand new cheaper COE car? If you would buy that brand new car, what is going to happen to those high COE cars? They get deregistered and exported.

Re: COE Trend

it's a no brainer high coe car is deregistered.
who wants to suffer high depreciation of coe ... ie: 60k coe = 6k per year
car dealer will also 'advise' high coe car owner to trade in for a new car with no need to fork out cash ....

My point exactly. Thank you.

Re: COE Trend

thanks, that makes more sense. but thats provided COE will drop. my thoughts is thst it my noy given our 6.5m population target and the affluent still buying cat b cars despite high coe

Re: COE Trend

Spore is the country of the rich by the rich and for the rich ..so dont bang on COE drop....

Re: COE Trend

There are also this group of people that bought their cars cheap in Y2009 and some of them are actually making some profit selling/trading in their cars now. This group of people will not really care about prices of COE. But do think buying Y2009 second hand car are good deal now as their COE are very low and there is no paper value at all. I would put my money in a new car with 60k COE compared to a Y2009 car with
