Hi all,

First of all, sorry as I know that this has been discussed in forum for many many many times. However, its either Im blind or none of the threads discussed about the information that I wanted.

As such, I need the experts here to help me in my homework before I commit.

1) What is considered 'ok' mileage for a year 2000 e46? 90k to 100k?

2) What are the common repairs (and expensive ones) that are usually required upon purchase?

3) As per item (2), how much should I put aside to be safe?

4) How many servicing is required per year? 2? And how much is per servicing?

Thank you for your help.

Cheers

hmm...so i supposed...3k is more than enough for all the minor issues and another 5k for major issues, e.g. ecu, engine, casket.....is there any link that shows the prices for 2nd hand parts?

Re: Coe E46

try to pick up a facelifted e46 - 2003 onwards.

doubt you need to spend so much on replacing parts. 3-5k is too much. might as well spend it on a newer car in a better condition.

the e46 engine is almost bomb proof, unless you pick a lemon. it's the other less expensive parts that need replacement - bushes, radiator and ancilliaries - these are the parts that need changing. the rest should still be ok.

the tranny and gearbox should also be in good condition. just need to change the oils. if you need to spend money to repair these, it's not worthwhile. pick another car. there're so many in sgcarmart.

This is useful Jin. Thanks....if im not wrong, there's this group here who will help newbies to go scrutinise the car, grill the salesperson to know all abt the car...test the hell out of the car...and gives the buyers the verdict...all for a glass of beer.....hahah

Re: Coe E46

some of don't drink beer, like me...

kopi c can?

btw, there's a damn good e46 sedan that is still available - it's quite a long thread with pictures and all. all done up and with low mileage.

search for jezza and wilman2772 and you'll find it.

you should be getting something like that... save you all the headaches later...

Re: Coe E46

Hi,
I spent $5k+ on repairs, but my mileage is high at 110k+ km, so everything was fallling apart. Get one with low mileage, that's my 2 cents.

Thanks C3PO for your inputs..its really helpful. care to share what did you spent on? I dun expect low mileage thats below 70k for a COE E46. Unless what Jin mentioned in his post...the mileage is only 30+k for a 04 model.

:)

Ok, I have a file where I keeps all my receipts and invoices. Long list, but basically everything that contain liquid and can leak, leaks (e.g. radiator, coolent, water tank). Aircon coil, that cost me $500+. Window motor, door mechanism, etc.
Btw, what is your budget? Top up a little bit and get a e46 2003 and newer?

yup..i was advised on the 2003 and later model with facelift....Im gathering all these for my preparation while Im continuing shopping. So guessed 5k is a reasonable sum to standby for repairs. Will see whether i can 'con' the dealers to giv 5k discount taken into considerations all the repairs...hahahah

Cheers.

Re: Coe E46

matrix (or is it neo?), don't have to set aside so much... $3k is more than enough.

there are some things that have to be changed (preventive maintenance) like oils and such.

and there are some things that need replacing only when they conk out, like the aircon compressor, window motor, etc.

the most important thing is to get a car that is well taken care of, not necessarily low mileage.

low mileage might mean the things that might give way will not have, yet. so it means that you will pay a premium for the low mileage, and have to pay more to replace the parts later.

get a facelifted one definitely - more power, and higher resale.

but also get one that that has all the necessary parts changed - minimum the expansion tank and radiator hoses.

and also look for one that is genuinely well taken care of by a car lover - frequent change of oils, frequent servicing, etc.

Re: Coe E46

one more thing...

not being sexist or anything, but do a check if you find a low mileage car, esp if it's a lady owner, expat, seldom drive, frequent traveller, 2nd car, etc. etc. (and esp lady owner).

women, in general, do not know when to send the car in for servicing, esp when the recommended servicing interval from PML is 25,000km. the most they do is top up petrol, send to carwash, and wait till something breaks down... (flame me, but show me evidence otherwise, kekeke...)

so you'll get a double whammy if you get this type of resale car - high cost, more things breaking down in the near future...
