Change of Brake Pads

My E90 stock brake pads are wearing out. I am thinking of changing it outside (not at PML). Will the workshop be able to reset the indicator? If not, where should I go to get it reset besides PML?

Thanks.

Re: Change of Brake Pads

Do you mean that the sensor will automatically sense that it is a new brake pad and reset?

I was told by a person at the tyre shop that if we change the brake pads before it wears off, we do not have to change the sensor. He told me that sensor is costly

i think the sensor is a consumable. no shortage of places to get it I guess....

Re: Change of Brake Pads

I think the sensor not need to reset. Just install the new pad then the sensor will sense the thickness of the new pad already since it was install between the pad and caliber. Send it to R2D or BVO, they can change the pad for you in good price.

Thanks for your help. :)

Re: Change of Brake Pads

as long as the sensor gave a reading, it's dead. You have to get a new sensor. NEW sensor from US is only US$14-15 thereabouts ... see here.

Re: Change of Brake Pads

the brake wear sensor is mounted on a small depression in the brake pads.

the brake wear indicator light comes on when your brake pads are worn out, meaning that the sensor is already rubbing on the brake discs and it's time to change the pad (and the sensor).

to prevent this from happening, make sure that you change the brake pads BEFORE the indicator light comes on. cos when it comes on, you will need to change at least one of them.

so, as you can see, the brake wear sensors do not need resetting.

learnt that when i kaypoh around when i changed my brake discs and pads.

Re: Change of Brake Pads

Other than the installation and sensor thingy...
U might want to consider brake pad with less dust generation for easy rRm maintenance.

Re: Change of Brake Pads

hi,

for sharing...

juz changed my read pads with R2D.... no issues, and cost is approx 3 times less!

changed my pads before sensor alarm comes....

front pads still ok for 1.5yrs old ride, guess its becoz of the rear wheel drive configuration...

cheers :)

first thing..it depends on what reset you are talking about...

as for ECU reset ( as in reseting the brake service mileage on your i drive or speedo screen ) most workshops like bvo..r2d..j4c can do it...

as for brake indicator , you have to change it everytime u change ur pads...and it cost less than 60 bucks if i remember correctly...

the brake indicator in the brake pad is not exactly the one measuring the depth of your pad..in fact they cannot measure it.... so whats shown on your service screen is just an estimation and not 100% accurate it also depends on on how you drive...the best way to get your pad's actual wear and tear checked is by asking a mechanic to check it visually , or yourself if u know how and your wheel spoke allowed you do peek in.

the brake indicator is there to warn you when your pad is maybe about 5-10% left..in which the brake pad will be thin enough to actually eat into the indicator... then it will show a RED warning on your speedo..

thats is surprising , do you got the car new? because i have never heard of anyone wearing out the rear pads faster than the front pads . most prolly previous owner changed the front once already...else go get the front pads checked too...

and no...RWD doesnt matter ( you dont brake while accelerating dont you) its usually 70% frt and 30% rear....

wow... i didnt know tht.... front pads checked and apparently ok...

cheers...

Re: Change of Brake Pads

pml nowadays never put anything in the booklet anymore... its all computerised database...

its normal wear and tear..no biggie.... the next time go get ur rotors checked too...

checked liao... moderately worn no issues, perhaps another year or so...

didnt bother with the brake sensors since i will be doing manual checks regularly.... :cloud9:

thanks!

Re: Change of Brake Pads

Actually, my E90 service monitor estimates that my rear pads are 2000 km more worn out than the fronts. Thought it should be the other way around also.

Re: Change of Brake Pads

Hello. Thank you for all the replies.

My mechanic told me also that sensor is cheap. I will juz drive until the indicator turns on before changing my brake pads. :)
