huh??? really ah???

thought they use their own BMW Life Long Oil or we bring our own leh...

Any BMW (not only PML) approved Longlife.01 life oil for N42 engine is suitable, not just Castrol SLX (although that is in the list). Remember to stick to the oil rating, i.e. 5W30.

Due to the long "recommended" time between each oil change, you may want to stick to the approved list. And also consider at least changing the oil filter every 1/2 the "recommended" interval.

Thanks.

Can't really believe what PML says these days.

What do you guys recommend? Shell or Mobil?

Thanks v much.

my valvetronic still running after 2.5 years of not using Castrol oil. go figure... u gotta take what PML tells u with a pinch of salt most of the time.

Hi,

PML informed me that N42 or valvetronic engines must use Castrol SLX.

Reason given is that the valvetronic engine requires engine oil to reach the valve train and electronic valve control mechanism more quickly as there are more components at the top of the engine that require lubrication compared to a converntion engine. They claim that this is needed especially during cold starts.

I got this feeling that they do not know what they are talking about, and hence need to know if there is any truth in what they have said.

I am thinking of using Shell Helix or Mobile One, as I feel that after using the Castrol, I found more mechanical idling noise from my engine.

Appreciate all views.

Thanks

They hv contract with Castrol so will tell u to use Castrol. When contract expires and they switch to another brand, they will tell u Castrol is not recommended hahahaha....

i have been using mobile 1 super syn and its doing great

I am using royal purple 10w30 for the M54 engine... i find it is also smoother that the stock oil the car came with... no worries so far. :)

was also thinking of using royal purple 10/30 for my next servicing. Cheap and good synthetic oil base with ester for protective layer.

Brother Vendor, how long have you been using RP? So far so good?
