This morning I almost "died" from a heart attack. As I was driving off at a traffic light, suddenly the car stereo went FULL blast ! Initially I thought my engine blown or some explosion, almost decided to jump car !

Then realise it was the car stereo and tried frantically to lower the volume. Nothing works, both the volume nob and the button on the steering didn't manage to lower it. No choice but to off the stereo altogether. After I parked the car later, tried a few more time to lower the volume but still no good even after I off the engine and restart again a few time. Finally, call PML to book service appointment and decide to try one more time. This time the volume control function works again.

Have anyone encounter this prob b4, is it cover under warranty ?

1st was the left side mirror refuse to tilt back after reverse, now the car setreo... sh... scared scared.
Hi Spidy, same thing happened to me! shocked the shit otta me when the volume went full blast for no reason. Did what you did but I turn off the stereo for a day. Following day was back to normal & no prob since than, so didn't call PML.

Spidy, I had the same problem as you about 1 year ago and that is really scare hell out of me  in the way that suddenly your stereo is out of control, volume knob not functioning (like got ghost inside your car :uhhh: ) and only way is to switch it off. And as what you did, switch the engine off and on for couple of time and it worked normal till now. Almost wanted to go down to PML and :shoot: them, just imagine if my kids is in the car.

Happened to me before and I assure you it will happen again. So make a appointment with PML and get the headunit changed, this is what they did when I sent in my car to fix the problem. Do not procastinate over such matters!

My wife almost got into an accident when the volume went bomkers!!

Happy new year and drive safely!

Regards,

elliot

This is not new. Happen to me as well. Same thing, travelling along AYE happily one morning on the way to office and suddenly the stereo when Max!! Scare the hell out of me (this woke me up for sure!) Initially I thot I had an accident (someone bang me or a car next to mine) and jammed on brakes (almost caused an accident myself), then realised that it was the headunit. It rectified itself the same way like you described, after a couple of restarts and then all went ok again. I have not experience the same thing since.... touch wood. My headunit is STOCK all the way without any mod at all. So I assume this is BMW's problem. I don't know how to tell PML to rectify it cos I can't reproduce the problem again. So, just have to watchout for it, I guess.

Aiee yai yai...so many of you guys ah...haiyo..

Well, at least the rest of us who've never experienced it can look out for it..

it's apparently a known problem for the head unit...

just go over PML and get them to rectified.....

happened to me as well....

Hey Piggyboyz, did PML replace the head unit completely for you?

How frequent was it before you had something done?

i didn't actually got them to change for me...

it happened on my previous car and i got the infor that they will replace if the car is under warranty only sometime ago....

How old is your car, may I ask ?

Got a new head unit

I hope the problem is resolved by changing the unit.

When i told the advisor he seems to know that it is a "known" problem. Anyway, i told him that this is very serious as it can cause serious traffic accident. He said they will check and when i collect it he said that they have change a new one for me.

So for those that has this problem and car still under warranty please make sure you get it change.

My car is now 3 years 3 days old, so warranty liao liao. Hopefully everything is smooth from now on.

Well, I had thought that this problem will not happen on me until this morning when I truly experience this problem myself for the first time. My car is only 2 months on the road. I called up PML this morning and they said an appointment have to be fixed in roder to check the wiring.

My mum always complain that when she starts the car, the radio goes full blast... everytime!! Until i confessed and said that its me blasting the music as i drive!

trogen,

do keep us updated on what your CSA says is wrong ok?

anyone knows if this problem is confined to the 3 series or does it affect all the models?

This happens to 5 series too. My stereo also went full blast abt 1+ yrs ago. PML replaced it for free. Can't recall whether my car was still under warranty then. As mentioned by someone in an earlier post, they know abt the problem.

maybe u guys should postpone the changing of ur headunits

i heard the new ones can play MP3s.... so wait for PML to clear all the old stock and maybe u'll get the MP3 ones? just a thought

Ok, here's my story continues....

I called up PML to complain about the problem . An appointment was booked in order for them to look into the problem. I went there in the morning. After discussing about the problem, they could not do anyhting but agreed to put the car on diagnosis. About 4 hrs later, got the call back form the technical officer. He said the diagnosis showed that they was nothing wrong with the Head Unit. BUT they agreed to replace it to avoid future recurrence. So, in the end, I have a brand new HU and a free wash on my car before chienese New Year.

It was good service and total customer delight. My only regret is that the previous one was only only 2 months old and could have waited a little while longer before replacing it.

hopefully, it's problem-free from now onwards.

Total cost : Zero dollars. But the whole day is wasted at the PML and at Ikea.

my dad told me that he experienced this on his 5 too.Think he shld go down to PML to get it fixed.

Re: Car Stereo went FULL blast by itself !

Any idea if the warranty for the head unit would be affected if you've done up the sound system but didn't change the head unit?
