Car Maintenance

Hi, would like to find out how much do u guys spend on servicing/maintanence for a new mid range BMW, say 325i or 525i sedan in the first 5 years. I was told it can cost a bomb.

Re: Car Maintenance

Depend on how u define bomb! :)

In general the basic like Engine oil, Transmission oil, spark plug will need more quantity compare to say Honda Civic. So in a way the maintenance cost is higher.

Re: Car Maintenance

I spend about $200+ on average per year to service my Honda Civic. From what I know, the maintenance for BMW can be anything from $1000+ to over $10,000 a year.

Another of my concern is the breakdown frequency. My Jap cars have never broken down in my 16 years of driving except for flat battery. Is BMW just as reliable?

Re: Car Maintenance

I'm currently driving a jap car and yeah, I dun think my car servicing costs over 1K/ year. I'm surprised to hear that maintenance is so high for a bmw. is this a common opinion?

I'm curious, is it the parts and labour that is more expensive or is that there are more areas that needs maintenance?

Re: Car Maintenance

I think it would be prudent to set aside an emergency fund of five figure sum for car maintenance.

Correct me if I am wrong, $1,000 to $10,000 per visit to service centre is probably be the norm for a mid range BMW.

Re: Car Maintenance

It really depends on how well you take care of your car, and how high your running mileage is. I had 3 BMWs during the past 5 years so should be able to give a fair comment.

For the first 3 years, the only money you'll spend is on servicing, which won't cost you much more than the jap cars. Any other problems should be covered by warranty.

I think the big figures items start coming after say 4-5 years, or after 100,000km. There will be more wear and tear parts to replace especially during this period. Annual budget of not more than $3000-4000 should be more than sufficient. Again, this depends on how well you sayang your car, and how high mileage it is.

My 2 cts...

luxury items gives u prestige and comfort
so in order to get the finer things in life and being in top echolens, I guess one must have the means to buy and maintain an expensive car...

so how to compare here? we arent just talking abt comparing europe vs asia in general

hope no one is offended...

Re: Car Maintenance

I think 715 gave a very good answer. We need helpful answers like his.

+1! Hokkien say ai hiong siew ai jiap siew! Anyway I don't think that the maintenance costs for BMW in general is much higher compared to Jap cars.

Re: Car Maintenance

Due to the 3 years warranty from PML, it is adviseable to go back to them for scheduled servicing, so that if anything goes wrong with the car, they can't blame you by saying that your car is not maintained by them and hence they can't honour the warranty. As I've said earlier, the money that you'll be spending during this 3 years period will be only on regular servicing. Yes, their charges are higher than outside workshops, but as servicing don't cost a bomb, it is better to 'bear' with them during this period.

After the magical 3 years period, most of the forummers here do not go back to PML at all! There are a few trusted and reliable workshops mentioned in the resources page that knows our cars very well, and can solve most problems faster and at a much lower cost.

I had a E46 and a E39 before, and sold both of them just before they turned 5 years. During the period when they were 4-5 years old, I did not spent more than $3,000 on repairs etc during the 2 years period.

I have my current E60 for about a year now. So far only changed oil once which costs about $200 if I remembered correctly. Didn't incur any other costs at all besides minor modding.

Also, didn't have a roadside breakdown during the past 5 years in my 3 bimmers before. (touch wood!)

Hope above answers your concerns.

My 2 cts again....

Re: Car Maintenance

Thanks, 715 for a very comprehensive reply. What you described is very affordable and better than my expectations.

Already got a nice place for my family and fully paid, so probably getting a beemer this year to fulfil my dream of owning one. Since already over 40, my remisier friend said better to enjoy life now if not when :yummie: .

The hard part is choosing the right car. Personally I prefer something low key but the entry level models are too spartan and probably worse than my current car. If I have to get the 335i, I will probably remove the 335i at the back and change it to 320i or something. Anyone keen to swap the name can contact me ;)

Re: Car Maintenance

Hi ktnpl, I'm over 40 too! Life is short, enjoy it while you can! Like army sergents always tell us, YOU WAITING FOR WHAT??? Ha ha ha...

If you find the stock cars too spartan, can always place indent orders! Haven't been down to PML for quite a while, but I think if you order 325 and above they should be quite well equipped.

True, will likely get a beemer soon.

Current 325i are stripped down with 16" wheels, no i-drive and poor sound system. Indents will take 4 months and subject to extra high premiums. SE said might as well get 335i ...

Re: Car Maintenance

Oh.... that's really spartan! I know they took off lots of features from the E60s in order to lower the price, but didn't know that 325 got the axe as well.

It might be worth it to order indent, though paying a premium and waiting, it's much better than getting the basic car and try modding it yourself, it's a very painful (and interesting) process!

On the other hand, with the same amount of money, you can buy yourself the top end Honda Accord V6 3L with the gadgets you want in the world!

BUT.... the drive is completely different..............

Re: Car Maintenance

Thanks, 715, I now know what I need. 325i highline
Let's hope PML brings it in soon.
I am going to wait patiently for it :)
Meanwhile, I'll stick to my unmodded Civic rather then buy another Jap car. It's super agile cos I am usually 100m ahead after leaving the traffic lights and it can overtake E200 MB with ease over short distances, without exceeding 2500 rpm 99% of the time, which leads me to believe that stats on car brochures aren't that accurate to begin with.

Re: Car Maintenance

For short distance, say from one red light to the next, jap car can overtake E200 becos of the body weight, power to weight ratio, torque curve etc. To overcome the ertia of Civic will be easier compared to a heavier car.

peak torque for most Bimmer come in after 2500 rpm, turbo cars usu last 2000-4000rpm. U can try to overtake a 325i on PIE or ECP next time, its not so easy anymore after 80km/h. I driven a corolla (2003 model) 2years ago and struggle to get the extra juice after 80km/h. A 4cyl cannot compare to the 6cyl.

sometime it also depend who is behind the steering wheel. its always better to give way rather than get "kissed" by another car.
