Car key kena soaked in

Made a boo boo and left my spare BMW car key in my shorts and wifey soaked it in the washing machine for an hr before it was found out. Not sure how waterproof the seal of the car key is. Yet to test if it is still working. Even if it can lock/unlock the car, hesitant to slot it into ignition without knowing if there are repercussions as a number of data wld be stored in the car key. So not sure if it will screw up the electronics.

I am tempted to send the key to PML for a once-over. Any of u had such an experience?

Re: Car key kena soaked in

my suggestion : remove battery immediately if can be done, if is 100% dry up & battery change shld be ok.
if not, dry up before u send for warranty claims haha, self-inflicted not count right?

Re: Car key kena soaked in

hmm.
another way is to change car. :p

Re: Car key kena soaked in

Happened to me before (keys of a loan-er 5er), dropping keys into pool, opened up casing to find that it's rather waterproof so crisis over.

In your case, follow Bro's instructions. Open it up and remove battery. Let it dry up completely, and I do mean completely, then assemble back for test. Should be fine.

Else, change car. Wilman's got an import E93 M3 for sale. LOL.

Re: Car key kena soaked in

the new keys on E9x models all no need to change battery for life. that's what I was told. the key charged during it was insert into the key hole. so i'm doubt the key can be taken apart to dry the internal parts.

Re: Car key kena soaked in

I doubt that is true, Acu.

I opened up my key and checked the samsung batt on it and compared it with the specs online and found out that it is non-rechargable. After speaking with my CSA, he too told me that its non-rechargable. However, the batt will last about 2yrs, depending on usage.

Re: Car key kena soaked in

wow the feedback damn solid.. haha look like change car is the better chioce !

Re: Car key kena soaked in

wah... SAM, really ar... hmmmm....

I'll check with them again. thanks for the info.

Re: Car key kena soaked in

If I was you.... I would change my keys, car, washing machine and most importantly WIFE!!!!!! kekekeke

Re: Car key kena soaked in

Really ah, my CSA Jeffrey Vasaloo also said its rechargable.

A replacement key cost ard 50 bucks...
Had a loaner car once, fiddling with the key, and mine dropped into the slots down the lift shaft at ESPN Lorong Chuan.

Re: Car key kena soaked in

3-series and 5-series different? I only know that my E92 FOB is definitely NOT rechargable. :)

Re: Car key kena soaked in

if you wish to take the risk and try it out, i'd suggest you open up the key and put it under the hair dryer for five to ten minutes before trying...

normally, if the buttons were not depressed when it was submerged, it should be fine... but if you have a built-in secure-chip, then well, it's tough luck - but worth a try anyway before forking out $50!!

Re: Car key kena soaked in

I think the key is rechargeable, at least on the e90. In fact I was advised to use the spare key once in a while during long trips up North to charge it. This info was fed to me during collection of my car on Day 1.

I will confirm once and for all when I send my car in for servicing soon and have the spare key checked.

Tks for all the feedback guys.

read somewhere that if u inadvertently drop an electronic component (like a mobile phone) into water, there's apparently a way out ...

the suggestion is to bury it in a bowl of uncooked rice overnight. apparently the rice soaks up all the moisture.

dunno if it works tho ... but no harm in trying ... nothing to lose ...

:D

Re: Car key kena soaked in

I think the key is not rechargeable if you have comfort access. Without comfort access, its rechargeable.
