Car a bit different after changing muffler

Hi fellow forummers,

I have a very noobie question here regarding exhaust. Sincerely hope anyone with the same experience before can advise me on this.

I have just changed my muffler to an aftermarket one, the sound is very shiok. Ok irrelevant.

Issue: Everytime I step on the throttle, the rev needle doesn't move up as fast as it used to be when I was on stock muffler.
Even on DS mode, when I used to be able to rev up to 5k rpm or 6k easily, now it struggles to even go above 4k rpm.
Guess it has to do with whatever lesser back pressure. Or whatever chim chim technical things which I am not good at.

So the query is what should I do to remedy the above problem? Do I:
- change air intake; and/or
- tune my ECU? (e.g. will Powerbox help?)

Thanks in advance for any valuable advice. Feel free to OT but must give helpful input first.

Re: Car a bit different after changing muffler

i'd say change the air intake and tuning/piggyback. you may also want to consider a acceleration/throttle booster device perhaps.

Rear mufflers should not make much difference interms of power apart from the sound. Unless you touch your cats, etc, you will need a retune. Perhaps you should get BVO or Boss to clear your adpatation values and drive it around. It might settle in better. Try it.

Re: Car a bit different after changing muffler

Just curious what brand of muffler you use?

Re: Car a bit different after changing muffler

(1) Solely muffler, minimal impact.

(2) Back pressure?

The truth about exhaust backpressure and torque

exhaustbackpressure

3. How did the myth about back pressure and big pipes come to be?

I believe it is/was a misunderstanding of what is going on with the exhaust stream as pipe diameters change. For instance, someone with a Honda Civic decides he's going to upgrade his exhaust with a 3" diameter piping. Once it's installed the owner notices that he seems to have lost a good bit of power throughout the power band. He makes the connections in the following manner: "My wider exhaust eliminated all back pressure but I lost power, therefore the motor must need some back pressure in order to make power." What he did not realize is that he killed off all his flow velocity by using such a ridiculously wide pipe. It would have been possible for him to achieve close to zero back pressure with a much narrower pipe - in that way he would not have lost all his flow velocity.

wa gam dong Ivan, you never OT my thread
a) I think I won't try throttle booster because it doesn't solve the fundamental problem ya.....robot smart this time tio bo? :D
b) Air intake is definitely a big consideration but I will double check with the workshop first - just in case it makes my car even more sluggish. If so, jialat siah.... if it won't, may change it. Ai mod jia eh yah, jawzsg say one.
c) I think I need tuning or what Omar had suggested below....ok, this I need to go to workshop to ask liao....

Ya, it's more for the sound only, hee hee. Didn't expect any power improvement.
Ok, if clearing adaptation values helps, then I no need to tune engine liao. I keep on thinking will my ECU be smart enough to adapt to the change in pressure or whatever.....seems like it won't.....

Aisirmen lacey. The sound, hear already can come type.....

Re: Car a bit different after changing muffler

i think u hv a simple problem. the guy who fit for u.......din do a proper fit. lao hong. exos airflow is not going all the way thru. there is a leak at the joint.

Ok Ken gam siah for the info. People always mention back pressure, nabey robot ganna con for so many years!
Anyway, any viable solution according to your experiences?

btw, the impact is very great as nowadays it takes eternity for me to reach 100km/h. Even bus can catch up with me. Sian.

Re: Car a bit different after changing muffler

2 things.

Like what toto said, you might have a leak in which case for sure you might be able to hear some hissing noise in the cabin. Secondly, you need to clear the adaptation values of the car and let it re-learn everything. Backpressure problem is usually more serious on cars where you change the entire system including cats and pipes with better flow rates. ECU cannot compensate enough making the car run richer and more sluggish.

Ok cool toto, that's a solution! I will go back to workshop and ask if there is any lao hong.... if nothing wrong then I will go pop by Boss. Very near only

No she can't speak yet so no complain. :chinese: But my sister did.
First day: Your exhaust very loud.... like Ah Beng.
2nd day: I am a humble and low profile person, I dun like the car to be so loud.
3rd day: can you please sell away that exhaust? (buah tahan on 3rd day liao, so very straight forward.)

you should listen to leia's mum's advice.

Re: Car a bit different after changing muffler

is it ur engine sway liap , exos tua kang ?
of course u rev the rpm slower la..

or ur leg weak ? i see u thin thin , lately kenna suck too much is it.. dun make pple faint again la..

Re: Car a bit different after changing muffler

Exhaust, then intake, then oil cooler and simi sai cooler, then BBK and simi lan steel braided hose, then......

You die liao, you have started down that slippery slope called mod poison.

Re: Car a bit different after changing muffler

Strange to hear you got prob after changing yr muffler , as I did a mod job to the stock muffler they effect is really good , not only sound abit bassy ( not intrusive sound ) , mid-high end rev is good too. For Auto tranny, maintaining certain amt of back pressure is needed as compared to manual which generally wants more free flow. my 2 cents

I think i did not experience yr prob becos i use back the same muffler size but did a "operation" to get sound & performance.

Not an expert on exhuast but maybe bring to another exhaust workshop for a second opinion.

Why is that so? Gearbox and exhaust flow have correlations?

Re: Car a bit different after changing muffler

robot,

when you say ecu tune, i assume you are considering PBX right ? PBX would be a better choice than ecu software tune.
