Hey guys,

Could you help out Toh, a new BMW.SG member, in answering these questions? I do appreciate your kind assistance :) Here is his message:

Please pardon my intrusion. Need to ask your opinion in buying a used 320i. I do not know much about cars, am deciding to either buy a late 08 A4 ($125k+-), 07 320i sedan ($87k+-) or 09 320i sedan ($123k+-) for a second car.

I checked with one cars dealers that he will trade in my 06 lancer. My question is if i spotted a direct seller, is it more complicated? do i need to find a buyer to buy my lancer first? or is it always better to just trade off with dealers.

Also for specifications in pertaining to maintaiing these three cars i shortlisted, what are the pros and cons in maintaining each of them, ie, insurance, servicing. Fuel consumption is not an issue for me, also am 40 yrs old so insurance should be fine i guess. Thanks for your help in advance.

Regards,
Toh

1. Selling to direct owner is not as complicated as previously. There are many people who are willing to do it, provided you get a loan so they earn some comms. Otherwise, trade assist is good also.

2. He can always try selling off the lancer first since he has another car at home already. This can prevent having 3 cars at home.

3. 07 car the major servicing should be around but pending the mileage as well. Insurance with NCD is a bonus

He said he has 2 cars at home... zero knowledge about car buy-sell? If he is asking about continental cars, assumming this is the first time jumping into this category, I think the question is valid and since he comes here, I'll advise him go for the 320 that suits his budget. Simple reason; basic luxury sedan & naturally aspirated = lower cost to maintain compared to turbo A4, which of course, also loses out on handling.

He seems to ask if it is safe to deal with direct sellers.

direct sellers are safer than dealers...

personal experience from myself.

Thanks everyone for your help, especially leica for helping to start this thread. i shall ask find out more first about the used cars regulations. Just a thought lately of buying a pre-owned car. Think i shall deal with dealers for less hassle.
