Caltex better than Shell?

I normally use Shell 98 but decided to top up with Caltex Gold over the weekend because of convenience. Wow! My car seemed to have better acceleration and the engine was quieter and smoother. I mentioned this to my wife but she said it was my imagination.....until she drove the car yesterday. She had completely forgotten about what I told her but she noticed that the car was "faster, lighter and more quiet". Then she remembered that I had used Caltex.

Anyone else had the same experience with Caltex or any other petrol? I always use Shell because of its association with F1 but now I am having second thoughts! I tried Vortex and that made a difference but it's too expensive!

Re: Caltex better than Shell?

i dun like Shell petrol.. to me, when i put in shell, car feels very rough

Re: Caltex better than Shell?

i prefer shell...vpower feels ok..but then i never tried anything else....cept petronas outside sepang...n i add 1 bottle octane in it....b4 track n after track...hehehe.

Re: Caltex better than Shell?

I used it on my previous ride and stick to it like a die hard fan. Why i stop? Last time my car was fully tune in but up a stage that the engine always pink(dunno right spelling or not) and the tuner really dunno what's going on, 1 whole tank of petrol finish and the problem is still there. So i need to pump gas. I ask the tuner any shell station nearby? Suddenly, the tuner seem like he saw a "light" say:" No wonder, ok now u try other petrol dun use shell after that see what happen." So I top up Caltex, the moment i drive the car the pinking is totally gone.... I go back to the tuner he smile at me said:" So u know what's the problem and what good what not good? From that day onwards i keep away from shell far far :)

Re: Caltex better than Shell?

hi kopi-o

hahaha... i'm been topping up shell for the longest time ( 98 or V )... occasionally SPC when i'm desperate (very low on fuel or when petrol big hike :furious: )...

will experiment on Caltex 's Gold really soon... will post result next week

thanks for the post

Re: Caltex better than Shell?

I don't feel any difference between the different brands of petrol. Only my wallet feels the difference in prices.

Re: Caltex better than Shell?

pg7170,

It would be good to hear your experience. I was really surprised by the difference. I would have expected a difference if I had gone for Caltex Platinum but not the Gold. Like a fool I have been using Shell faithfully because of their tie-up with the Ferrari F1 team. Shows how well the marketing worked!! I will now experiment more.

Caltex is cheaper too with the HSBC discount. Even comes with a free cup of coffee :)

I'm getting up to 17% to 18% from SPC using their fuel card and POSB Everyday card. To be honest, I've tried various brands before and got the same mileage of around 500-550km from a tank of petrol. So now I'll just go for the cheapest brand of petrol.

Re: Caltex better than Shell?

Been using Shell all along due to the widest network in Singapore (and also cos UOB got the Smart$ can redeem...), tried Caltex, Petronas and Esso only when across the Causeway. Maybe next time I should try Caltex....

Re: Caltex better than Shell?

i've used SPC for quite a while and always getting shitty mileage...until a friend working at SPC told me to try shell for better economy...this is my first tank of shell so will be back to update...

Re: Caltex better than Shell?

So far.. i've tried caltex 98 and shell 98.. both should be the same, frm wat i noe. Unless u guys talking bout Vortex gold and V-power...

Re: Caltex better than Shell?

hi guys,

on the local caltex site, it states that vortex platinum "Exceeds BMW Lifetime Performance Standard". what's this supposed to mean?

cheers,

saify.

Can we also mix a cup of coffee into other petrol and get better performance?? kekekekekekek:lol2:

Re: Caltex better than Shell?

Just drove until my tank was almost empty and topped up with Caltex Vortex Platinum. Car seems to respond better to throttle input. Might just be my imagination though. Hahaha.

Both 98 octanes should be the same but Caltex Gold feels better, at least in my car. Don't know why! Those using Vortex should compare with Platinum!

Re: Caltex better than Shell?

Mind 318 valvy filled with Caltex platinium when it came out from PML since 2003, sometime try Shell V power and Senergy 9000 Exxon Mobil and now back to Caltex platinium feel same power as newly bought,

Cheers

Re: Caltex better than Shell?

I used to pump Shell and have noticed that the quality is pretty inconsistent. I have sinced switch to Caltex and it has been delivering power consistently.

I used to pump Vortex 95 and recently tried the Vortex Platinum. It felt great as the engine appears to be smoother, quieter and performance has also improved. Of course it is expensive but I am only pumping it once in a while mainly for its cleaning function.

Re: Caltex better than Shell?

When trying out different petrol grades, any changes to our car's performance should be negligible to us drivers, unless you're using something with an octane rating below the car manufacturer's specs... or diesel for that matter.

(my job is related to the oil industry and for a couple of years I specialized in gasoline markets)

So don't worry too much about it - just go for the stations that offer the best discounts or stock their shelves better!

Beemmeup,

That's exactly what I have been told by some traders (I'm in oil & gas industry too). Caltex and SPC comes from the same refinery anyway, just different additives added I guess.

I have been pumping Shell as they have a wider retail netwk. Nonetheless, I am still keen to try Caltex!!
