Break-In / Running In / Oil Change

Just got a 523 and was wondering how long it took to "run-in" the car? I was advised 2000 km (keeping below 4000 rpm). Is this correct? Also, when should one do an oil change? Should I do it after break-in at 2000 or should i wait till 25000? Thanks.

approx 2000km and do not exceed 4500 rpm.... vary your speed and no hard braking..

I got different advise from different people too. I was told to change at 1, 6 and 12K before the recommended mileage of 25K. I quite kia su so it makes sense to me but a friend is waiting for the 25K as he thinks that BMW will make the right recommedations. I was told to run in for 2K too.

Re: Break-In / Running In / Oil Change

frankly speaking i dont think there is any engine oil that wil last till 25k. i changed mine at 10k..

Re: Break-In / Running In / Oil Change

All parts in the engine will have some form of wearing in to do before a perfect fit occurs. No mass produced car that i know off is able to provide a factory run in program to allow all the engines to have perfect fit. During running in, the parts wear out abnormally fast and wear down until the surfaces match. The worn particles are either trapped in the oil filter or are carried in the oil as a suspension. Therefore, it is advisable to change the oil at 1000km to clear these contaminants and thereby leading to better engine life. As to how to run-in, just keep you engine under 2/3 of max revs. ~4000rpm. road speed is not a factor. Brakes are usually bedded in by the time the car is delivered to you.

2 cents worth

Re: Break-In / Running In / Oil Change

I changed once at 10km, just 2 days ago at 20km mark. My next oil change will be at 30km when its time to go for 1st servicing at PML.

Now using a fully synthetic brand of oil called "HI REV", good lubrication motor oil or lousy stuff suitable for frying goreng pisang nia?
