Bodykit PP vs PU

Hi,

I understand BMW OEM bodykit material is PU (Polyurethane)
There are replica bodykit made in PP (Polypropylene) and swear by it that fitment is 100%.

I Google and read posts from different forums and understand that many commented PP is better than PU. Hence, is "cheong" bodykit made in PP is as good as oem if not better ?

What's your view on this ?

Re: Bodykit PP vs PU

Cheong type depends on your luck for fitment or reliability of the tabs etc.

OEM type if something goes wrong, you have a recourse - assuming both are new.

Re: Bodykit PP vs PU

i will consider cheong kit because oem kit do don't fit. for example M3 bodykit
i will also consider cheong kit because oem kit is out of reach. for example the bmw performance kit

still want to find out is PP > PU
yes, i want look and don't want to spend a lot of $ but i shouldn't care less about safety. the front+rear bumper is critical for protection in accident

If reps are (1) stronger, (2) cheaper and (3) nicer in fitment and finishing, then OEM can never survive.

There are various issues:

(1) Flex - PU flexes, hence always preferred to Fibreglass. One bump on a hump on a PU sideskirts, and you will know why. Not sure how PP will perform.
(2) Finishing - reps typically has a finishing issue. Either wavy or bubbling finishing.
(3) Fitment - naturally, since finishing is already off.

My take - small add-on parts like mirror covers, lips, you can use reps. Major parts like sideskirts, bumpers and diffusers, stick to OEMs.

Just my two cents.

Re: Bodykit PP vs PU

hi bro, i think bmw oem bodykit is made from ABS plastic.
usually PU and PP are used for aftermarket kits.
PU is more rigid, less flexible...its the same material they use for some bowling balls
PP is slightly for flexible, but its the type of plastic where u can twist n turn and it won't break but u will see a white mark on the affected area.
ABS still the best but its much more pricer but then again these 2 materials are still slightly better than FRP.

The flexing bit is important - My previous car whenever the front bumper hit a hump hard (or goes up a slope that's over elevated) and it twists, I just twist it and it snaps back into shape. If the PP material is hard, I think it might just snap.

Re: Bodykit PP vs PU

good for you

the AC kit for E90 is a 5 pcs addon, which make things simpler than total replacement for front+rear+side

No la, can try fitment first before paying in full mah. If cannot fit, still can bang table and ask them to change for you or take back deposit. If overseas no chance to check fitment.
