M135i is not a M car but a MPA (M Performance Automobile) i.e. an In-between the non-M and M car.

So is the M135i moniker coined by BMW or the reporters from ST? Shouldn't it be called 135 M Sports like what we commonly know?

ST called/named/coined the M135i as M1.
Also the M135i and 135i M-Sports are different. Leaving other details out, below is a basic difference;
M135i = Stock is 320bhp
135i & 135i M-Sports = Stock is 306bhp
