BMWs more than 10 yrs old

Hi Chaps, I'm contemplating getting a renew COE BMW 320/318 but was thinking of the following...

1) Insurance costs: Around what range are we looking at?
2) Car condition: What are the things that are likely to give way since it's so old? How much does a new engine/gearbox cost? I've heard that these older car parts are predominant here but wonder how true it is. Since it is a BMW, unlike most japanese cars, I suppose it is built to last (more than 10 yrs?) :)
3) Maintenance: How much does it costs for the usual regular maintenance? I'm not sure if BMW, like Mercedes have this monopoly maintenance thingy. Far as I know, Jap cars maintenance damn cheap coz lotsa Unauthorized ppl do it and they do a damn good job too. What abt BMW?
4) Fuel Consumption: what is it like for a typical urban profile?

Apologies if these information are found elsewhere coz I'm new to the forum! :nehnehhh:

I don't think i'm the best person to give u the right answers but...... maybe some little tiny tiny bits of info from me...

1) I got it insured under my father... sorry

2) Car condition? think gotta check the usual stuff for 2nd hand cars... maybe take a test drive and pay attention to any particular sounds or rattles you might hear, knocking sounds or stuff like that. Might be due to sme worn bushes or shock mounts. Driving the car will also let u "feel" how the car behaves. Engine, guess u gotta check if the car idling is proper, check the aircon, aircon fan... i think there's ALOT more stuff to check for... hope the experts can help on this

3) there are quite a few workshops specialising in BMWs. don't have to go back to PML

4) Again, can;t really help cos mine is a 316.... and i don't pay attention to the FC

Hope u find a gem though. Good luck!

Hi there... i'm driving a E36 320 myself and i hope i'll be able to answer some of ur queries.

1) Insurance cost... i think dat depends a lot on ur age and driving experience. ie. I'm 28 with 3 yrs of driving experience and i'm paying abt $900 for a 3rd party fire and theft insurance.

2) For car conditions... dat really depends on whether or not u get a worthy assessment done on ur intended purchase. As for the gearbox (auto)... it can range from anywhere between 2k for a 2nd hand to probably abt 7-8k for a brand new one. Car parts are definitely easily assessible i should say. My ride has done over 200 000km in 14 yrs and i personally think dat it's still going strong.

3) We have some really good workshops here in singapore dat specialises in all types of bimmers. General maintenance cost is not dat far off from the japanese or korean ones... in fact... some bimmer parts are even cheaper!!!

4) FC varies from car to car... my ride is currently doing abt 7 - 8k/l but i've heard of other rides doing 11k/l.

Hope i've answered most of ur queries.

Have fun ya!!!
