bmw service intervals changed to 12000km

Hi All,

Was told the newer cars sold by BMW is now serviced at 12,000km because they found that at 25,000km the engine was too thin and probably not good for the engine.

The rest of us are stuck with the 25,000km service intervals. I understand that BSI follows the 25,000km interval and I pay for my in-between services out of my own pocket.

Why is it that BMW or PML does offer anyone who is willing to topup for the BSI package difference but rather choose to act blur and keep mum about it? Are they now afraid that their workshop will not be able to cope with the increase traffic due to shorter service intervals? Or is it just a profitabilty consideration?

Anyone care to share your thoughts?

Cheers!

Re: bmw service intervals changed to 12000km

i think if they really are keeping mum about this...and so far it really seems that way, then it's just plain dishonest as they are not adequately and responsibly informing us of the need to change the way we care for our engines.

from what i know, PML subcontracts a fair amount of work to external workshops and this is confirm true and accurate as i know one of these workshops..so to say they cannot cope with the increased inflow of cars to be serviced/repaired will be plain bullshit!

we also had to pay out of our own pockets for the 1st service after a year because they said "mileage too low no need to service". if we took their word for it then we would have ended up with only 1 or maybe even no service after the 3 year package is up!!!

i suggest we ask pml about this new change or perhaps seek some clarification of their obligations to those who have BSI from BMW Asia or something.

Re: bmw service intervals changed to 12000km

on which badge of the cars that sold by PML had this new 12,000KM service recommendation?

you mean on our OBC said 12,000KM instead of the normal 25,000KM?

Re: bmw service intervals changed to 12000km

I think car sold in the Asia region has got their counter set to 12,000km instead of 25000 wef from September 07. My car has got 12000 as well but the funny thing is that I have clocked 500km but the countdown still show 12000km.

I believe the change is due to our traffic condition with a lot of start stop and there had been quite a few cases of oil sludge in engine, hence the decision to change.

However I have checked with PML and they confirmed that with the changes, it doesn't mean that the Inspection will now be carried out more intensely. Apparently the inspection would still come on at 40 or 50k km. So it's the matter of more frequent oil change thats all.

Re: bmw service intervals changed to 12000km

The change is only for new production car. Existing car will not be affected.

Re: bmw service intervals changed to 12000km

This is bad news! So should we follow the old or new rule? Either that cars manufactured and delivered before Sep 07 are make of much better quality, all M parts?! :nehnehhh:

Re: bmw service intervals changed to 12000km

spoke to someone at cycle&carriage today...apparently they too have heard about bmw's 25000km oil change interval and the tech guys there find it unbelievable as well.

Re: bmw service intervals changed to 12000km

Does this mean that it's more prudent for us to go for an oil service every 12,000km instead of waiting for the 25,000km interval?

Re: bmw service intervals changed to 12000km

Yes and no. Yes if you are keeping the car for posterity (say, if you're living in Malaysia and there's a good chance that your E46 330 will become a classic in 20 years' time) and No if your car is going to follow the normal path and get exported before 5 years is over.

Does the oil actually get dirtier as the miles roll past? Yes.
Does the oil get dirty enough to kill the engine as the miles roll past? Yes, but even then, WE ourselves are closer to death every second we live, so what else is new ... ?

Depends on what oil you use, Some oils dun last past 5k km, engine get loud and racous :furious:

Re: bmw service intervals changed to 12000km

My mechanics told me the hot weather in Singapore is differ from Europe (Germany) which their cool temperature is able to "tahan" until 25,000 km.

Re: bmw service intervals changed to 12000km

Just to add one more point....our engine oil will degrade over time so you ought to change it even if you haven't been driving a lot :)

Re: bmw service intervals changed to 12000km

see. last time I posted a thread to change oil twice as often ie every 12,500 km instead of the recco-ed 25,000km intervals. Kena 'suan' for non evironmental thinking, waste of $$ etc.....kekeke

On JDM cars, even for shell helix ultra synthetics, the interval recco-ed for JDMs normally is 10,000km. So whats so special about BMW engines that they can tahan 2.5 times the period. anyway its not that I 'kiang' or what but its just that I asked alot of people with other cars, and workshops n all suggest to change. One even said to do 8,300km.

engine always smoother n quiter after oil change.

Re: bmw service intervals changed to 12000km

THe new 523 lci comes with a 10000km service now. Also fitted in E60is an "oil Quality" sensor which checks condition of the oil as time passes. It is all a part of BMWs condition based service program. I can confirm that it was not present on the E90 320i, not sure of the higer ranges as they share same engines.
