* January-June 2011 passenger models by authorised distributors

The BMW 5 Series is Singapore's top model for the first 6 months of 2011. From January to June, among authorised distributors, the mid-sized luxury saloon in its various engine versions has chalked up a cumulative 1,268 units.

This means that the 5-Series accounts for 51.1% of the 2,479 BMWs registered so far this year, or one out of every two Beemers that were driven out of the Munich-based carmaker's forecourt.

In second position is also another luxury German saloon - the Mercedes-Benz E-Class with 962 units. With this number representing 49.5% of the year-to-date total of 1,943 Mercs, it also means that half of all cars with a three-pointed star sold thus far is an E-Class.

But overall, Volkswagen is Singapore's favourite nameplate. The mid-range German brand has 4 models in the top 10: the Touran MPV, Scirocco 3-door coupe, Golf hatchback and Jetta compact sedan.

Interestingly, the Volkswagen Scirocco is a 2-door lifestyle model (or more accurately, a 3-door hatchback) that is among the top 10 models.

Traditionally the domain of four-door and MPV models, the list now includes the sporty Scirocco with its mainly 1.4-litre COE Category A engine powering it to 6th place with 286 units.

It comes in behind another VW model, the Touran compact MPV with 293 units.

Previously, Toyota used to be the most prolific brand in the model ranking, with stalwarts such as the Corolla Altis sedan, Wish MPV and Camry executive saloon.

The evergreen Corolla Altis (538 units) is still present at No 3 though, but with only the Camry (267) for company so far this year. Another perennial favourite, the Kia Cerato Forte (297), is at No 4.

Also worth noting is that another German luxury model, the Audi A4, has joined the club. The compact sedan with the four interlocking rings is now Singapore's ninth most popular model with 256 units registered.

VW damn power. The 1.4TSI engine is in EVERY car they make. One drivetrain rules them all. One DSG problem, also kill them all.

Re: BMW F10 sales figures

BMW is #1 automotive brand in sg? How? I wonder why they are so popular and what made them so popular...

BMW has emerged as the top selling car brand in Singapore for the first half of 2011, followed closely by rivals Mercedes-Benz

The Bavarian carmaker led the German charge by selling 2,479 cars in Singapore for the first half of 2011, a 2.3% increase over the same period in 2010. Rivals Mercedes-Benz was second with 1,943 cars sold from January to June this year, a 0.4% rise.

Long-time leaders Toyota/Lexus are now third, with 1,678 units shifted in Singapore in the first half of 2011, a massive 52.5% decrease. This can be attributed to a major reduction in COE quota and the subsequent rising COE prices, especially in Category A where Toyota has been the dominant player over the past few years. With COE prices reaching new highs, premium carmakers like BMW and Mercedes-Benz now have the advantage as buyers are less hard hit by the rising COE prices.
