BMW engine heats up more than other cars?

Hello all Hia-Dee/Hia-Buay, there is a question I ve been wanting to ask for sometime.

When I park my car after a long drive home, I usually find the engine/bonnet/front wheels very hot, much hotter than previous cars I have owned. Even my neighbour can smell it if hes in the garden:lol2:

Why? Is it bcos the BMW was made to drive fast on the AUTOBAHN and therefore on our SG streets when we drive too 'SLOW to EASY-SINGAPORE DRIFT' style, there isnt enough cold-air to cool the engine system down? I realised when I was driving 160km/hr up north last week, the car wasnt much hotter or that hot when I stopped at a petrol kiosk.

These days after I parked my car, I would lift open the bonnet to give it a faster cool down. Part of reason why I do this is also to cool down the bonnet faster in case the heat damage the Paint protection system n dulls the colour/shine. Is this correct thing to do?:) Also, sometimes after an especially aggressive drive home, the car engine which is very hot gives off this "tok tok tok" sound every few seconds until it cools down sufficiently.

Does my car need to see a DOCTOR?

Re: BMW engine heats up more than other cars?

Normal lah Beng. That's why you need a Vorsteiner vented bonnet, hahaha...

The tok tok tok is due to the different metals cooling down (contraction) in your engine. Different rates of contraction = tok tok tok lor.

Every car also got one...

Re: BMW engine heats up more than other cars?

ABD, BMs and other german cars have sealed bonnets. i.e. there is a rubber seal around the top edges of the bonnet that seals around the top. What the manufacturers want is to divert all the air entering the engine to go below your car instead of above the car. That way high speed stability is increased. Your brakes and engine is warmer during town/city driving. Its normal bro...

The tick tick tick sound is from the exhaust system cooling down. ( this includes the CATs the pipes and especially at the joints.) So bro, steady.... you car is ok...

Cheers

i just had a warning light yesterday...idrive telling me to drive moderately....engine hot. thing is i was driving slowly...from marina ecp to aye portsdown...nothing aggressive. why did it happen? this is the 2nd time. the first time was when my car had ribbons etc during a wedding as bridal car. that was understandable...as the flowers was blocking the vents n i was driving at 60kmh.

kam sia kam sia.....thats the difference between an expert n a BENG.

So I should drive even faster than now? More cool air for the engine, machiam cold air intake airbox?:screwedu:

Re: BMW engine heats up more than other cars?

totoseow,
It's telling you your driving is too slow. Need to speed up to get more air in. Could be your electric fan wearing out? Coolant level low?

Ahbengdriver,
BMW engines do give an impression of running hotter but when you actually fit gauges and measure it, it's not as hot as JDM turbo cars. My supercharged BMW never hits the kind of oil or water temperature a stock Evo will reach, on the road and on the track. If all parameters are within spec, then a hotter engine gives more power because energy is not wasted to heating up the cool metal and water but used to push pistons.

Tanzy,

I see I see. So hot is OK. Good to hear that and I can sleep in peace now :)

Re: BMW engine heats up more than other cars?

ah beng, my ride blow out the heat from the right hand side front wheel like a fighter jet.

if u put an egg near this side of the car, the scramjet of heat wave from the engine can make half-boil eggs the same way u get in ur favorite kopi shop hangout.

not sure u tried this before. maybe u can boil eggs using this method for all your hiadee also. :)

Oh yeah u said it man. Reminds me when I went back to do my reservist days. When they introduced the aluminium packs of ration, we used to throw them onto the bonnet of the humvee of landrover to warm the food, and its ready to serve warm. Applying that theory, I shld be able to make some roti-prata on my bonnet when its hot :yummie:

Re: BMW engine heats up more than other cars?

i can feel that my car isd hot but the heat doesn't seem to travel to the bonnet, more like u can feel the hot air coming out from the sides of the front wheel fenders

Re: BMW engine heats up more than other cars?

i agree man...and most times my front left wheel (rims and surrounding area) is significantly hotter than the right front one...anyone has the same experience?

Used a better cooltant will minimise the warning light from idrive. A good quality cooltant can take away faster and more heat from the engine.
