BMW E46 – problem with key memory and side mirror.

Yesterday, I programmed the driver seat position and the side mirrors using the remote control key memory as written in the car manual, and both settings works fine whenever the car is unlocked via the remote control key.

But we encountered one problem though- when the gear is shift from "D-drive" to "R-reverse", the side mirror does not reposition itself to point downward like it used to.

What have I forgotten to do? I've programmed the side mirrors for "D-drive" gear, do I need to do the same for "R-reverse" gear too? :(

Re: BMW E46 – problem with key memory and side mirror.

on an e39,i would just toggle the side mirror adjustment switch...up or down to either make it auto tilt or to cxl the auto tilt in reverse gear...not sure e46 uses the same function though ,u can try

Re: BMW E46 – problem with key memory and side mirror.

i think u need to move your side mirror adjustment switch to the Left for it to auto adjust when u switch to Reverse.

Re: BMW E46 – problem with key memory and side mirror.

No, it should be switched to the right. :)

Yeah, for the E46 model, the side mirror control must be switched to left side. I have done that check already but it didn't help.

So I wonder do I need to program the key memory for the left side mirror in "R-reverse" gear too?

err.... if my info is correct, switching the side mirror control to the right is for E60 model, while E46 is on the left. :)

Re: BMW E46 – problem with key memory and side mirror.

Oh really... my E46 was screwed up then!! I will switch it to the right and my left side mirror will tilt down. Same thing for my E92. :)

Re: BMW E46 – problem with key memory and side mirror.

E46 FL is right.

Crazy programmers....

Re: BMW E46 – problem with key memory and side mirror.

no leh my e46 FL is left...just try either one should work

Re: BMW E46 – problem with key memory and side mirror.

For me, when the mirror switch is on right, the mirror moves a fixed amount downwards and outwards. I suggest you try this process to program your left mirror:

1. Adjust both mirrors to desired angles and leave the switch on the left position.
2. Engage reverse gear and with the switch on the left, adjust the mirror until it is suitable for you to look at the kerb.
3. Put gearbox back into drive and check if mirror adjust back up.
4. Engage reverse again to see if mirror goes back down.
5. Leave the switch on the left to use this programmed "reverse" position.

hey thanks, will give that a try.

Re: BMW E46 – problem with key memory and side mirror.

for my e46 FL, the switch has to be set at left. if i set it on the right, the mirror wont autotilt.

with my car i use this method.
1. put gear in Reverse
2. put mirror switch to left, adjust mirror to your liking.
3. then i have to press the red memory key and then either setting 1,2 or 3 on my power seat. (so it will remember the degree of each tilt down depending on which seat setting i choose)
4. put back into Park gear. the mirror tilts back to original position. then just to check, put into Reverse. the mirror should autotilt back down.

so now depending on which seating position i choose, the autotilt will be adjusted accordingly for 3 different seat settings.

So in other words, for the mirror to auto tilt downwards, the memory key needs to be programmed in Reverse gear too.

Re: BMW E46 – problem with key memory and side mirror.

I had a similar problem with my E60 520. It seems not to tilt for a while then whola....it works fine like normal. I decided to change the whole motor to "fix" the problem. Hope this helps
