BMW Car Care - Tips appreciated

Hi team,

I just got my 320i delivered on Saturday and been driving it around. It's downright gorgeous and my wife & I love it to bits. It's our baby :)

I'm now keen on taking good care of this car. While I can send the car off to SFC every now and then, I was wondering whether it would be more cost-efficient for me to wash my car every now and then. I'm now saying a thorough wash but to keep the exterior and interior relatively clean until my next trip to a professional cleaning house :)

I was hoping for some tips on the following:

1. Should I wash my own car? If not, why not?
2. What sort of carwash should I use? Clearly, bleach is a no-no.
3. Where can I get good car products at a good price?
4. When should I send my car for a wax/polish?
5. Any other suggestions are appreciated. I'm a BMW-virgin so please be gentle :)

Thanks all - you've been fantastic!

Halo Mr BMW Virgin:)

First thing u need (n u havent dont so) is as soon as you possibly can after u drove the car off the showroom, send it for PAINT PROTECTION TREATMENT. U dont want to wait till Bird Bomb, cigarette butts n what hv u landing on yr new paint work before u decided to give it a coat of protection.

Trust me, this is THE most important first thing to do.

next, if u dont already hv, is to put on V-KOOL. It will protect yr interior from bleaching UV radiation n also protect yr karchung from being roasted due to the Infra Red radiation. N pls, pay more n get a good one.

yes...u can wash the car urself..as for tips... u can ask spa for cars...they will tell you what to take note... and u can buy their car wash products...seriously... their stuff is good...

Why not wash ur own car?, of course you should.. just rem to get the right towels,mits...

2. What sort of carwash should I use? Clearly, bleach is a no-no.
well there are many to begin with, but i would get the poorboy's shampoo, tho at a slightly more pricey tag, it's shampoo is one of the best i've tried.

3. Where can I get good car products at a good price?
Good price not sure, but Spa For Cars does sell thier mits, leather cleaners, cloths, shampoo etc. so... one stop for all ur needs there.

4. When should I send my car for a wax/polish?
That depending on what u look for, many or if not couple of us go to Spa For Cars, i don't know bout the rest of the grooming places but i like Spa For Cars for thier attention to detail...

5. Any other suggestions are appreciated. I'm a BMW-virgin so please be gentle :)
I would say don't rush into anything.. drop by a couple of grooming places and see which fits u the best, once u've decided on who to go with .. you can start asking them for tips on how to maintain/wash ur car. alot of methods dude.

Thanks all - you've been fantastic!

i hope the above helps uh.... the best advise ever given to me was never to rush/jump into anything.. so take ur time.. look see look see.. no harm...

Thanks everyone!

Ahbengdriver - Paint Protection Treatment? Wow... that sounds fancy. I've not heard about that. Where can I get this done and would you know how much it would cost? I don't wanna get ripped off.

Terry - poorboy's products? Sorry if this is a really stupid question but is "poorboy" a brand? It sounds too funny to be real. I'll shut up if it's a real brand. I guess SFC would have the stuff.

shaaz - thanks for answering each question. I'll visit SFC for the gear :) Super!

there are a few out there, I went for ToughSeal. $400, am happy with it. it claims that you need not use wax or polish ever again, just wash normal with the shampoo provided. if u so prefer, can go back to them for quick 10min wash at $10 or thorough wash and add-on layer of protection for $60. location is AMK Indus Park

Hi, can you explain more about the paint protection treatment?

Re: BMW Car Care - Tips appreciated

IMHO it all depends on you. If you have a lot of time for your car, wash it yourself. Always wash the car when it has cool down and do not use the same cloth for the whole car. It is the fine sand/particles that caused the swirl marks. So also use pently of water to flush away such particles first before washing. Remove any birds dropping etc and do not allow it to "eat" into the paintwork.

Paint treatments are for people who has no time and do not wash their car often. But it has limitation too. If you do not take care, it will still cause swirl marks on your the paint work.

Ask yourself do you enjoy washing/detailing your car? If yes, do it yourself if no go to them for maintenance.

Re: BMW Car Care - Tips appreciated

Thanks Henry1515. I think that since it's a brand new car and I do enjoy giving it a wash, I might as well. It's quite a good way to destress as well. I'm just eager to hear what suggestions you regulars might have in terms of how to wash, what products to use etc :)
