put the car up on stands on LEVEL ground, get some proper gear oil; remove the FILL plug on the rear diff; fill till u see oil dribble out of the hole...yeah..thats how hi-tech a method BMW intends for it to be! the right oil level is measured by the bottom most level of the HOLE.
the trick for me is to pour the gear oil into some form of PUMP bottle, cos theres no way in hell u have space to TIP the bottle of gear oil INTO the filler hole..so i use an oil shampoo bottle, with a little rubber hose, insert that into the filler hole, and pump away lying beneath the car (ok, i dun have hoist at home!)
