Re: bimmer onwers...
i see COLBAR...i know the place...
Address: 9A Whitchurch Road (off Portsdown Rd)
Colbar used to be one of the hottest chill out place by virtue of its out-of-the-way location and its casual setting. This eatery had begun life as a canteen for British soldiers. I have been informed that its novelty factor has faded since.
A picture of calm and some “retro-ness”, Colbar is housed in a one building structure nestled amongst the vegetation. I know Singaporeans are suckers for such unique settings…thus willing to pay a premium. Our fellow Malaysians probably eat in such places everyday and would be raising their eyebrows (and making the universal gesture of madness - twirling of the index fingers at the head) at the sort of prices that we are paying.
If I am not wrong, Colbar closes on mondays.
The main dining area bore an uncanny resemblance to the training sheds we had in my army days. Do note that this is not a favourable comparison. Some of the most mind-numbing periods in my life were spent doing brain-dead and pointless exercises at the army shed.
If you notice, the shed has areas boxed with yellow markers that one has to confine oneself to in order to smoke - the smoking zone. The Singaporean Government has embarked on a drive to persuade the populace to stop smoking. They have raised prices of cigarettes and banned smoking from many venues. Probably the only reason why an outright ban has not been enforced would be the lobbying from the powerful tobacco industry - anyway I digress and I clarify that this is just my opinion (please do not send your ninjas to kill me..oh all powerful Mr Silent Cowboy).
I had the Pork Chop with Chips & Mushrooms (around S$8-10..can’t remember). The mushrooms looked like they came from a can and they tasted like they came from a can. The fries were definitely homemade. I pay some attention to the quality of fries nowadays eversince I heard some tales/anecdotes that the fries served by a certain fast food chain have a make-up more similar to plastic rather than food (please do not send your ninjas to kill me..oh all powerful Mr Clown). The Pork Chop were pork chopky.
My colleague’s Chicken Salad. He was on a diet and health regime thingy.
My other colleague’s Steak. He is obviously not on a health regime.
The Chicken Cutlet. We saw much bigger portions at the adjoining table. Hmm…maybe the old lady that mans the counter didn’t like us. A friend of mine boasts that the old lady, notorious for her bad service, is always very cordial to him. I think we live in a very competitive society when we rate our daily success on the quality of food we get and the treatment we receive from cranky people…
P.S. I went back to Colbar on another occasion. I ordered the Steak Sandwich (S$5) for lunch. On account of the picture below, please don’t follow my example. Note that there were thumb prints firmly embedded in the bread and that I finished my lunch in a record time of under 3 minutes.
