benefits of x-pipe over straight pipe

anyone knows? it seems that it will eventually lead to the same pipe and eventually the mufflers but why is X-pipe generally more sought after than 'straight pipes '

i feel it makes the exhaust sound different.
it adds some backpressure to it when the 2 tubes converge. usually the m3 NA guys do it ...very popular in the states..but never heard turbo guys do it.

i did it once and took it out...felt it wasnt constructed properly at the exhaust shop.

but my advice is dont do it..
