The European Union (EU) has granted a permit to a German Pilsner to officially name their beer : Fucking Hell.
It's a fully legitimate permit.
"Hell" in German was a term used for light ale in Southern Germany and Austria, and Fucking is an Austrian town, pronunciation [
ˈfʊkɪŋ], "fooking" as in "booking"
The ale's name was initially objected to both by the local authorities in Fucking and by the European Union's Trade Marks and Designs Registration Office, on the grounds that it contained an expletive.
It was eventually accepted and the lager is now sold internationally.
So next time you step into a bar, you can legitimately and politely ask for a “Fucking Hell”.
Cheers.
