Auto Motor und Sport: finalization of Porsche DSG spec

No fan of DSG but bemused with Porsche's choice of DSG.

I got this from the Cayman forums then checked it out myself with google translator. AMUS is never too far wrong, so if they mention a BRAND they're probably right.

Porsche will use Getrag's version of DSG. Other design wins for Getrag include Mitsubishi Evo X. If I'm not wrong, BMW and GTR uses Borg Warner. This is probably because Porsche requires transaxle style for both 911 and in reverse-mode for the Cayman since it's mid-engine, and only Getrag makes the full range at the moment.

Obviously the Evo X with the best motoring videos have given Getrag a BAD reputation, even though the problems with the misshift after 3 laps was later diagnosed down to bad firmware, which was promptly fixed.

Now I gotta do research on how Getrag goes around Borg Warner's patents ...

Availability:
911 - end 2008
Cayman and Boxster - possibly 1Q 2009

Finally, the end is in sight for Tiptronic?

Re: Auto Motor und Sport: finalization of Porsche DSG spec

While it may replace the Tip, DSG shud remain an option.
Standard is still manual in general.

Re: Auto Motor und Sport: finalization of Porsche DSG spec

From what I heard, there will be 3 options in the near future. PTK will not completely replace Tiptronic as that option cost is going to be quite ex.

What's the torque on the non Turbo Porsches?

The SST on the Evo X has a max torque of around 43kg m if I remember correctly.

That might require a completely new model on the Turbo which has almost 60!

It's gonna be a different box from the EvoX one, since it requires reverse drive+transaxle. But the wet clutch technology should stay the same, rather than the new fangled moist clutch system in the GTR. True to form, Porsche used a tried and true solution, though heavier and more expensive, but relatively bulletproof now, and BMW/Nissan used new fangled unproven moist-clutch system.

Re: Auto Motor und Sport: finalization of Porsche DSG spec

I would have thought DSG is a more proven model than Getrags :)

you mean BorgWarner is more proven brand than getrag when it comes to DSG, then yes.

But the technology of wet clutch is more proven than moist clutch. BW is a baby when it comes to moist clutch, it's their first design win for that.

Edit: According to the Cayman forums, here is the transmission:

GETRAG Corporate Group - 7DCL750 TRANSMISSION
