Any i3 owners here in Singapore?

Would love to hear some owner's experience both in driving around Singapore as well as finding charging stations around.

Anyone out there?

Re: Any i3 owners here in Singapore?

Someone said the freaking road tax is $1.7k? Why is LTA punishing people for driving eco cars.

Re: Any i3 owners here in Singapore?

seems to be $1.7k. Road tax structure is a bit whacked. Doesn't encourage efficient car driving.

Re: Any i3 owners here in Singapore?

Still I see some i3 on the road, not many though. None of them seems to be active on this forum

Re: Any i3 owners here in Singapore?

i3 is sold with a charging wall box. A full charge gives a range of 130 to 150km. It also has a range extender, which nearly doubles the range. Never really need to look for charging station so far, although more than 20 Greenlots charging stations are available all over the island. Going longer distance to Malaysia will be problematic. But that's not what the city car is built for.

Since most of i3 sold in Sg is i3Rex, you can drive it from SG to TH border in full tank (10L). Better than diesel le.

You are right about the maximum range. However it is problematic because to achieve this you will have to run very cautiously in Eco Pro Plus mode, which will shut down the air-con (sweat!!). You must also remember to leave enough battery power to drive back, as there is very few charging station in Malaysia to recharge.
Honestly can you imagine driving such a conspicuous car and ran out of power in the middle of the road in Malaysia : )
(actually not likely with the range extender, but why risk it?)
A smarter way is to make use of BMW's Flexible Mobility programme to loan a 320i (up to 5 days) for this kind of road trips.
But driving in Singapore, the range is more than sufficient. Most i3 owners will probably only need to charge once in 2-3 days (better than iPhone)! The cost of running is also nearly unbeatable. I am getting >11km per kWh (cost: 21 cents/kWh).

Re: Any i3 owners here in Singapore?

You are right. But this can only be done in Eco Pro + mode, which means no air con (hot!!). U will also need to leave some juice to drive back. The Rex tank is so small that you will need to stop at the petrol station almost every hour. Better to make use of the flexible mobility program by BMW, and loan a 320 (up to 5 days a year) for these occasional long trips.

Nice! I'm about to collect my i3 next week. Looking forward to a new adventure with an (mostly) electric car.

Did you manage to get a front dash cam installed? I'm thinking of that and window film.

Congratulations on your new car! I am sure you'll have a great experience.

I am not bothered about front dash cam. Window film will be a great idea. I also added ceramic coating, which can be used on the carbon fibre roof and glass panel at the back.

Re: Any i3 owners here in Singapore?

As in a ceramic coating film? Since there isn't a sun roof, what would be the benefit of coating the roof?

Re: Any i3 owners here in Singapore?

I did a bit of research and I think you are referring to paint protection coatings. For that, I'd be carrying on my package with Diamond Brite. Still have a few sessions left and will use it.

Will get it to a window tint place first.

Re: Any i3 owners here in Singapore?

I don't know which trim you ordered. For the lodge interior, the light grey carpet-like floor mat is very difficult to keep clean. The usual black floor mat also doesn't match the colour tone of the seat and dash board. In the end I had to custom make one from 3M. Might be worth considering as well.

Re: Any i3 owners here in Singapore?

Yes... The sales guy said he will throw in a 3M set for me.

Have you tried modifying the portable charge to a standard UK 3 pin plug?

Re: Any i3 owners here in Singapore?

No. The Wall Charger provided is more than enough for all my charging needs, and faster than the regular power points (Level 1). But if you do want to drive frequently to Malaysia, that may be necessary.

Re: Any i3 owners here in Singapore?

I'm trying to see if I can get the home charger to run at 32A. I ran thicker guage cables and used 32A breakers. Would like the efficiency increase and full charge in 3+ hours

Re: Any i3 owners here in Singapore?

As long as it is certified safe it should be fine. At the moment, I am running at 16A (Level 2). A full charge (

Re: Any i3 owners here in Singapore?

Collected my car yesterday and what a pleasure to drive. Silent, great acceleration and full of gadgets to play with.

I was surprised with the sound it makes during part of the charging cycle... Something like a buzzing fan sound, probably trying to cool the battery (?). Irritating.

Re: Any i3 owners here in Singapore?

Congrats! Agree with you about the silent acceleration and gadgets. Still having fun trying out the details.

The charging sound you mention isn't very obvious on my car. Possibly it is the battery cooling system. Did this happen after a long drive or on a hot day? So long as the blue light continues to flash, it probably is ok. You can also call up your i3 genius to find out more.

Re: Any i3 owners here in Singapore?

Spoken with the genius and he believes it's the cooling system. Sometimes happens in mid charging as well but doesn't last through the whole charging time. He says he sees it a lot in their fleet as well.

I did find the updates from the app sporadic. For example when charging with a departure time set, it doesn't update the app so I can't see that it's charging. This doesn't happen when I don't have a set departure time.

Still lots of bugs in the car software and apps
