Amplifier

Yah man... order straight from the US... btwm what is your price range?

not really sure about that...hmm...what a good value for money?

There was a thread on this topic a while back. Why not search for it? There were lots of brand recommendations as well as dealers.

Well, amps range from 300+ to a few thousand, so it depends on what you hope to achieve with the sound system on your car? You going for a complete makeover or just a simple power upgrade on the car?

i wud suggest u look at the whole car audio system. Most of the installers mentioned in the forum charge very high. and not necessarily the best in terms of tuning and honesty IMHO.

u are driving e46, the most apparent inadequacy is the absence of low freq. The permutations of what can be done is endless, and as mentioned by some resident forumers, it depends on your budget.

Maybe u wanna reveal more about your requirments. i m guessing u are not an ICE enthusiast, therefore u may just need a good-enough system setup.

The first question is...do u wanna change your headunit ? ICE enthusiasts will tell u Garbage in Garbage out, ie no matter how good your speakers, amps etc are, the source of the signal, which is the headunit (HU) is very impt. NOt to worry though, if u are not discerning enough to tell whether the cello sounds real enough etc, u can keep your existing HU.

U definitely need to change the front components (midbass and tweeter).

U SHOULD add a subwoofer, get the enclousure type. a 12" will do.

Get an amp , but i recommened separate amps for the components and the sub. This is your main qn. What should u buy. Depends on budget. Reputable brands include Orion, PPi, JL Audio, Soundstream, Phoenix Gold etc... quite a long list actually.

U may be able to get good deals in the ICE forum.. but be ready to be poisoned cos there are some really hardcore enthusiasts there.

Search the previous threads for "Tye Electronics" and other posts from oneHeadlight. He is very knowledgeable. :)

From the advise in the forums, I've done a simple upgrade with a 4-channel amp with LOC line converters driving Alpine speakers. Very very happy with what I've done, but I'm the kind who can't tell the difference between a real cello and a synthesizer. :) :)

No la.....I m not very knowledgable but i did a lot of research before i did my upgrade. SPent quite a bit of time visiting installers, reading up the net, going to forums. Lucky enough to get advice from some enthusiasts who are not related to any shops.

There's a fellow forumer here who also did alot of research and he helped me quite a bit too. Its all about sharing info so that we wouldnt get conned or pay too much for too little value. I've heard enough of shops saying " dont fleece bmws, then fleece who ?"

Emiffy, try adding a sub, and a 2ch amp or monoblock to power your sub. It will make a lot of difference. :)

I think most importantly, you have to listen to a lot of stereos before deciding on what to buy... different people have different taste so what someone else likes is not necessarily the best for you... so go out there and listen to everything then make your decision.

It also depends on the kind of music you listen too.

oneHeadlight, thanks! :)

I didn't want to drill anything, so the subwoofer option is out. Most of my stuff I DIY, with information from the web. Surprising how few installers in Singapore know what they are talking about.

I had positive experience with Tye Electronics. Other shops/places... you are right about the "fleece BMWs".

What did you go for in your setup?

The weakest link in my setup now is the headunit, and lack of low-end. Without subwoofer, I think that's the best I can do for the time being!

Very true... thats why when you go audition a system, be it a car or home system, you should bring your own CDs... things that you are familiar with... only then can you tell what is good...

Rodd, You ah... damn slimy... like that also try to increase you posts...

Emiffy... I had positive experience at Tye too... The guy's tuning skills are very good, can make a system sound more expensive then it really is...

I'm slick rite??

whahahahahaha

Hi,

Carhartt

my suggestion is to meet up with fellow forumers and listen to their installs before deciding. Helps alot to discuss and do the appropriate research. Sound quality is very subjective and one system characteristic defers from another.

Most importantly it must be music to your ears
:laughlik:
Also, the most enjoyable part is in the research phase, listening to different speakers to find out their characteristics.

Have fun!

emiffy,

My set-up is very modest. FRont components, a 12" sub, two 2ch amps (one for components, one for sub). If u need low freq, u definitely need a sub to play 80hz or 60hz and below. With a sub, and for instance if u listen to Hotel California, u know after the solo guitar part when the bass comes in, u can feel the bass "tooooomd" throughout the car.

I've nothing against Tye but they seem to only carry Lanzar pdts. Prices are sky high for a modest range of pdts. WOrkmanship i heard is good but carpentry stuff, most decent shops can do. As for tuning, nothing much to tune if u dont have processor, eql etc.. Only the gain and crossover settings on the amp. No rocket science. Superb tuning can result in brilliant staging and imaging but if we stick to our headunit and add nothing else, nothing much to tune anyway.
Just to stress again, i have nothing against Tye but i think one can get better value for money elsewhere.

oneHeadlight,
What head unit are you running now? Like it was said earlier, perhaps the best way to go would be to add another "ghost" headunit.

no really gonna totally facelift the whole sound system...just maybe "touch up" on it.....budget around 1.5K....

Thanks guys for giving so much advice.....will listen more and than decide later....dont wanna jump into a but without knowing too much

by the way, stay away from those who have huge systems... else you will be drawn into that blackhole which you will never escape from.. hahah... if you want a simple system, go and find people with simple systems...
