Alternatives to lugging a spare tyre around

Hi Guys,

Do you have any recommendations on alternatives to lugging a spare tyre around in the car? I'm trying to shave off some weight but unwilling to risk being stranded with a flat...

Bought one of those foamy things some time ago, but since I never did use it (probably expired by now), I have no idea whether it's effective...

Has anybody used it before? Is it effective? Any other alternatives?

Thanks!

Am carrying one of those tyre filler foam in my car, since I have to leave the spare tyre at home to give way for the ICE.

Used it once - lasted me the journey (easily 20 to 30 km) to the tyre shop. The filler foam works. However, by the time I dragged the tyre until the point I discovered the flat, the sidewalls are cracking. It was replaced i/o of mended.

Thanks! Any idea where I can get it (forgot where I got it originally!!)? And how much should it cost?

Autobacs or Stamford. Cost about $10 max - there are many brands.

Best is to buy few cans and leave one in your trunk, leave the rest all over in your friends' trunk. Just in case......

ehhh...another silly question...

is your spare tyre the same size as your actuals? if they are not the same size, can they be used together?

also, if we use the foamie, can the tyre still be salvaged or will it be a total replacement?

thanks!!

Different size. In my case, the spare looks like a motobike tyre. Very very slim. And smaller, since I upgraded my rims. Sure can be used together, but not over long distance. I suspect the stress on the axle is one issue, plus the width of the spare tyre rendering poorer handling and stability is another issue.

In my case, the sidewall gave way before I have discovered the flat. In other cases, presumably if you have made an early discovery, you should be able to salvage the tyre depending on the leak. But the inner walls will be very dirty - these foams will create a huge mess......

Interesting read:

"So the spare tyre really is redundant, right? Since we don't ever change the tyre over, why carry a spare. After all, who carries a spare fan belt? If that breaks, the car is immobilised, and it's a heck of a lot smaller and lighter than a spare tyre, but we don't carry one, because we never carried them. Which other car part goes wrong so often that we need to carry a spare and have the skills and tools to replace it?"

yeah...mine's an inch smaller and a lot narrower (it's a continental temporary use tyre)... exactly, different sized rims will cause uneven stress on the chassis and stuff... somewhat surprised that the agent gave us a spare that's smaller (i didn't even upgrade my rims!)

indeed... there are so many other parts of the car that could potentially fail...why bother lugging around just a spare tyre... will leave it at home from hereon... (ha ha...hope this will shave 0.01s off my 0-100 timings!)
