Re: alarm system

I used to use a high-end version of Crimestopper in my E200. It has an anti-hijack feature in that everytime you start your car, you have to press a secret button within a set time otherwise the engine will die (feature can be turned off if find it troublesome under normal use. Recommend to leave it activated though). This set-time can be as long as 2 to 3 minutes. The idea is to let the 'robber' drive far away from you before the engine dies (so that you can run for help). It also has a remote engine start. I can start my car from my house window so that the air-con will come on and cool the car by the time I reach the car in 2 minutes. In America, the anti-hijack can activate a 'smoke-bomb', in that it emits an orange smoke.

Usual 'high-end' features includes rear siren, battery back-up, ultra-sound sensor (can leave your windows half-down when you go for lunch) and bonnet lock-immobilser once the alarm is activated (safe guards battery-point cut).

I choose Crimestopper because it has a 'running-code' system whereby everytime it is activated (lock/ unlock car doors), the frequency is changed. Also, instead of send a one-frequency signal, it sends a burst of five signals. I understand that the probablity of a accidental 'same remote control' trigger is like 5 billion. Even then, this frequency changes the moment you lock/ unlock.

I used that same set in two cars (yes, total about 12 years of use) and is very happy with it. At that time, it cost me about $1800.

My current 318i comes with BMW alarm. Very bare system. I miss my remote engine-start. It's the best mod I ever had. Very useful when you park your car under the hot sun during lunch hours.

Re: alarm system

I have a friend who went back to KL to help out his father. The Comany is called Netstar Advanced Systems. They install a transponder inside your engine, hidden. Now, when someone break into your car, the alarm goes off, a good breaker will take less than 10 seconds or less. Immediately when your alarm goes off, Netstar is informed. They will call your mobile to check if its by accident or a real break in. If someone drives off your car, they will be able to track it down. Recovery rate is 99%, only down side is when your car is lifted off into crane and transported via a container truck, your car must be running to be able to track it. My friend told me even the KL police deputies have installed the system in their cars, mainly Toyota Camry. You may like to check them out, or pm me for my friend's details.

Re: alarm system

Fate plays a part in life. But we can manage it. Like parking at bright public area (instead of basement car parks, I mean when in Malaysia); Like having a whistle in your pocket to 'scream' in case of emergency; like not wearing expensive-looking watches and gold chains; like moving around in a group instead of being alone.

Finally, be appropriately insured. If you travel often, even just neighour Malaysia, it is overseas, hence benefits under a travel insurance package can be applied.
