Aircon Compressor Kaput

Just forked out 3K to replace the aircon compressor on my 4-year old F10. My question is: how can a compressor break down? I seldom drive my car as I travel quite extensively. I don't leave my aircon running while parked. It's not a component you can readily remove to mess around with it. So how can it break down?

i always have an impression that Conti-car aircon components are not as lasting as Jap car, and also not as cold.

maybe its because conti-car aircon are designed with cold-warm air. Whereas Jap cars in singapore are all about cold air only.

Please correct me if i am wrong.

I have heard of BMW's air con issues surfacing up more frequently than other brands. My E60 air con died on me during the 4th -5th year. Repaired in JB for RM3600. Site sponsors are usually more affordable than PML
