Airbags on A pillars

In the midst of ICE project now... keeping eyeing the prime space on my A-pillars...

The car has an airbag inside... but I plan to actually mold my tweeters onto this pillar.

With the airbag still there, the concern is I get flying tweeters in the event of airbag deployment. (er... tweeters expensive leh  )

But still very tempted place them there. Idea now is to rip out the whole pillar + airbag, and custom make my own A pillars with matching velour, and integrate the tweets.

Anyone knows whether the ECU will give me lots of problems if the airbags are no longer there, and whether the ECU can be bypassed for the windscreen airbag self check?

your airbag light will come out. and if you place your tweeters there and the airbag is deployed, the tweeters will definitely punch a hole through your skull and kill you.

Dear ICEMAN....

In view of our friendship, I suggest that you go get a walkman instead.....

Are you MAD ?? If the airbag deploys (touch wood) the tweeter would become a projectile....unless you fancy the words "Lotus" imprinted on your head ?

Consider doing on the dashboard instead....still can get the imagining dude. Mine can...no reason why yours can't be achived.

Iceman,

Nice meeting u last Sat at Hong Guan. Since u gonna squat there for whole of this week, pls bring a stool and yes, I wld like to know the damage after the whole fix wahahahah end of OT

Not sure about your model but my E46 has the tweeters mounted into the factory made enclosure at both the front windows? (near the side mirrors?) :ehhh:

So I wondering why u need to tinker with the A-pillars...

wow.... no spare tyre...no airbag on A pillar....all in the name of ICE. As Ghostrider said, put them on the dashboard dude..some tuning and u will get the desired imaging...

Safety first... an quan di yi.... selamat satu dua tiga ampat lima...

Sound stage, most probably....but.... safety 1st, go for next alternative location for the tweeters

I would like to offer an alternative solution. The space behind the original tweeters are rather large and deep. If you are going to install 1" tweeters, no prob. Any larger and careful sizing is critical.

If you mati mati want to mould onto your A pillar then you need to measure the resistance of your airbag with a digital multimeter which can measure low resistance (<10ohms) range accurately. Thereafter, you need to shop for an equivalent resistor at Sim Lim tower +- 2%
A resistor of about 1/2w power rating should be enough. The resistor will be able to fool your airbag control unit to thinking that the air bags are still there.

BUT, like what the fellow bros said. Safety First, The car has 6 bags for a reason. Please try not to be so "hiong".. :) :)

Er... hahaha

You guys have convinced me to preserve my life.

The original tweeter mountings are a wee bit shallow for my tweeters (1.5" deep). Besides, the original location at the door handle is really not optimal for SQ. Path length differences for driver and passenger side is just too much.

I'm trying to place the tweeters as far away in front from me as I can. Options are on top, or below in the footwells but imaging will be too low. Have decided to place on dashboard, and custom some (possibly ugly) tweeter pods.
