Advice on setup for upgrading from 16 to 17 inch rim

Hi all

did a search but couldn't find anything useful. need some experts' opinion on my set up.

was on 195/55/R16 and upgraded to 17" rims. workshop recommended set up was R17x8, ET48 with 205/45/R17 rubbers. may i know if this is the correct set up? cause the rims seems to protrude too much out now and the tires seems to be too narrow.

Front right rims.

Tire seems like it is not wide enough?

Hi otar,

yes from your pic it does looks abit out plus tyres undersize.....

* which variant?
cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeers

Re: Advice on setup for upgrading from 16 to 17 inch rim

The protruding is due to the offset. Some like it that way as it looks aggressive. The tyres are narrower and may not not be able protect the rims if u hit the curb.

Re: Advice on setup for upgrading from 16 to 17 inch rim

i thought the tires was undersized too but when i pointed out to the workshop, i was told that it was because of the tire and rims design.

is the current F56 mini.

Re: Advice on setup for upgrading from 16 to 17 inch rim

thanks bro. is it something that i should b concerned and rectify - either to have a smaller offset or a wider tyre? or i can just leave it and wait for the next tyre change?

Difficult to judge 100% from photos but it does look bit aggressive on offset and tyre's bit narrow.

Below is result from online calculation via http://www.tyresizecalculator.com/tyre-wheel-calculators/tyre-size-for-rim-size-width-calculator

Having said that, there are some minor differences in tyres depending on brands, profile, etc. Some have wider and some have narrower walls.

Think bit too late to do anything since you paid for rims and tyres already

Re: Advice on setup for upgrading from 16 to 17 inch rim

thanks all with the inputs so far.

i will check with the workshop tomorrow but thought i should get some opinions here. worse case, post the rims for sale. are there any bmw that can use R17x8 ET 48 5x112? sigh.

Re: Advice on setup for upgrading from 16 to 17 inch rim

this is useful. so the tire is indeed too narrow based on the calculation.

At least it looks ok. Maybe can wait till next tyre change as mentioned.

Think BMW's are 5x120.

Re: Advice on setup for upgrading from 16 to 17 inch rim

This setup is known as a poke setup. I did that once ....

Some people can appreciate this. But I think it's got lousy traction and the comfort level is bad.

The tyre shop guy a big fan of the poke look ?

Anyway 17" with 8J is too wide. Should be around 7J .... Each J is about 25mm.

Offset should be around 48 ......

Re: Advice on setup for upgrading from 16 to 17 inch rim

poke setup? hmm... this is something new to me. before installing the wheels, i did tell the workshop that i want the wheels to be flushed and but not protrude. hope there is good outcome and a solution after i talk to the workshop tomorrow. sigh.

Yes and from your photos, tyres look too narrow. Also do a search online for recommended ET for your car too

Re: Advice on setup for upgrading from 16 to 17 inch rim

thanks all. just an update -

workshop insist that there is nothing wrong with the set up and is the best for my car. so lan lan, went to another one and pain pain lup the PRODRIVE GC012, R17x7.5 ET 45. used back the same tires. now tires are not over stretched and wheels flush nicely. for the next tire change, can use 215/45 or 225/40 instead.

a real pity indeed as i have grown to like the OZ Formula HLT, really nice rims without having to burn a big hole in the pocket.

Nice choice of rims. I'm in the same set (GC012) in silver. Cheers.

Re: Advice on setup for upgrading from 16 to 17 inch rim

Rest of us should avoid that 1st WS you went to :uhhh:

Re: Advice on setup for upgrading from 16 to 17 inch rim

thanks. wish the spokes have abit more curve near the centre. as mine was only 17", the spokes look pretty short and kinda like 2D only when view directly from the front. plus it is in black... so won't even know it is Prodrive. LOL.
