Advice Needed: Sell or Don't sell?

I'm in a dilemma so need some good advice from all you guys...please help me evaluate..thanks in advance. Old bird, new bird, all please stand up!

It's an Oct '02 E46 318i, meaning to say the time has come to decide whether to sell/export/keep...problem is, the car is still in good condition and the mileage is really low for a 5 year old car...only around 34K.

Option 1: Keep for hopefully another 5 years since depreciated so much already, considering low mileage, good condition etc.

Option 2: Get new car, and that means big ticket spending..Probably get the E90 or C-class..

Assuming financially can take up either option without breaking the bank...how??? Still a good car by today's standards but the new 3 and C seem to again have improved tremendously..It's more heart vs. mind rather than absolute necessity.

Any comments will be very much appreciated..thanks again!

Re: Advice Needed: Sell or Don't sell?

try doing the maths part 1st, that is how much u can get back getting rid of the car after deducting loan outstanding??
or else can go try asking if any dealers are offering overtrade for your ride when u buy a new one from em

Re: Advice Needed: Sell or Don't sell?

thanks sszone...i have the figures, the next 5 years depre wil be cheap compared to the 1st 5...

overtrade or not at most 10K or so...if the new cars that are considered are close to 150K...still not too strong an incentive, that's why say heart vs. mind...quite tough really...more a should i or not scenario...HELP!!!

Re: Advice Needed: Sell or Don't sell?

Kurqa,

That's pretty low mileage found in sedan, it's defintely for local resale, it's a shame to export. I think there shd be demand for this car, $60k Plus,no?

If you so decided to go for new car, i will rather you hang on to the ride and wait for the facelift E90 though i reckon it will be another close to a year wait, that's my guess, i could be wrong. IMO, after E90 mid life rejuvenation, u still have a 3 gd yrs to go before the new model.

My E39 expectancy is cut to half coming December and if head rule over heart, i shd wait till the facelift version be available b4 i change. That make more sense to me. Though it's true you lost some PARF value once you cross the 5th Year mark, i still find the wait bearable.

I can't say so for the same if you choose C Class, nice car but for handling, i seriously doubt it match 3ser having test drive SLK, CLK and E Class b4 though it belong to different class

Re: Advice Needed: Sell or Don't sell?

ur mileage is really low. if selling off, how much can u get back?

buy new car n sell away current car will incur more loans for sure, it all depends how much you really like the new car. if i really like the new ride, i will go ahead with my heart.

looks like it is a want more than a need.....but cars in sg, sad to say is an luxury item which burns cash.....

final decision is still urs mate....gd luck.

Re: Advice Needed: Sell or Don't sell?

sszone, turbo, como...thanks for answering so quick and late into the night...im into the final week of decisions really...so will be keeping a close tab on this thread for the next few days...

my heart is definitely not "raging" for a new car lah...if so why not rage for sports car right? hahaha...besdies, dreaming is free!!!

yes return should be around the 60 region...funny how the 523 LCI went from 177bhp to 190 but the 323 still stuck at 177...if the 323 eventually does get 190 then sounds quite good eh..?

well, if you guys have any more advice or got some funny ideas please just type away anytime...and thanks very much again...will wait for more input from everyone..

Re: Advice Needed: Sell or Don't sell?

Oki let's dream,hehe... but let's confined it to the facelift version. It will be 190horse, for sure. Top that off with a smiling face front bumper than a frown face, LED lights rear and hopefully stick like gear knob found in 5ser. Nav be standard from 323 and above, 335 will get HUD and CS as standard, well this is really wishful thinking and HOPEFULLY a tune up enery to the already monstrous turbo.

Re: Advice Needed: Sell or Don't sell?

Yup, i suppose so for the initial launch only. This are the the tell tale sign from 7/5ser

Re: Advice Needed: Sell or Don't sell?

kurqa, at least u can take comfort in the fact that u can or might dump your current ride for a new one.
as for me, i'm stuck with the E36 ride.
my loan's till next june, so after that i am loan-free for the next couple of years.
feel tempted to sell my ride and buy a new one but the amount i get back is not much while have to cough up more money for a new ride.
so ultimately, its a case of heart VS $$$.
are u prepared to take up a new loan or throw in more money for the ride?

Re: Advice Needed: Sell or Don't sell?

take it another 5 years and your mileage will only be about 70k km... you should not have major maintenance bills since you dont use it much...

Re: Advice Needed: Sell or Don't sell?

u hv the same dilemma as me.....it boils down to the $ factor if u ask me.....if u hv that xtra $ go for it....else 35k mileage is really low. the new cars u mentioned E90 or c-class...i hv tried them both...no big deal bro. i wud rather tahan a few yrs more..n then upgrade to next step...ie better bigger satisfaction.

Re: Advice Needed: Sell or Don't sell?

e90? better not be the 320i but the 323i onwards I think would be nice. My missus says she struggles every day without active steering on her 320i so your e90 choice, I'd suggest be purchased with active steering.
C class reviewers seem to be raving either over the entry kompressor or the 350. What an extremity of ideas!
Your heart is probably saying 'buy one of each' His and Hers?

Re: Advice Needed: Sell or Don't sell?

kurqa,

since u have posted this question, i can tell ur heart is already tempted to get a new car. as such, i dun think u can tong for 5 more years no matter how good ur current car is. i know!

my advise to u is to change since financially is managable. like what the bro had said, wait for the new E90 FL model. cheers

Re: Advice Needed: Sell or Don't sell?

sszone>> for me, even if i were in a situation where i may be able to afford the change of car it's still hard for me to do because people in my family all use cars for 10 years...the old-fashioned system where "can use just use on"...that's why dilemma...

mart>> even the workshop guys told me the same thing...but wear and tear still occurs when you under-utilise right?

toto>> i understand exactly what you mean..from what i observe i think for you money is no problem but it's just your heart pain...and besides, even having money also doesn't mean just splash right..? good thinking. BUT...that being said...you said e90 and C both no big deal...brother you driving 530 leh!!! did you compare against 330/335 and c280/350 not? otherwise not fair lah!!

mark>> i fully agree...for me either at least 323 or nothing...not so much for active steering though, but after driving a relative's 523 for several occasions, i can tell you inline-6 is inline-6...no fight...it's just nicer than the already nice valvetronic.

hitmee>> if you can offer me good rate for US dollar...like 1 US = 3 S$...i will change tomorrow!!! and i will pay for your rims too ok...you really damn lucky lah...335 is different league my friend...1 day i want to ride in it

Re: Advice Needed: Sell or Don't sell?

Hi ! Kurqa.

I met a few Kaki driving the same model E46 318i during the Sep 2007 meet-up.

All of us are having the same problem as you regarding whether should we sell/export our ride before 5th years or continue to drive for another few years?

After the discussion, no conclusion because we really love the look and handling of our ride.

May be you should look further, example any plan to have more kids etc......If yes then go straight to MPV :)

Imagine: You + Wife + Kids + Maid + Mother-in-law + Father-in-law etc.....You really need a MPV. Look further and plan wisely :)

Good luck...............my turm will come 1.5 years later or earlier because my wife already complaint car too cramp due to my baby girl. I just act blur and refused to change car.....Ha Ha :)

Re: Advice Needed: Sell or Don't sell?

hi bmwsilver, for me i guess i will still buy a car from the same class/size if i change the 318 (and yes i too like the look + handling...high five!!)...even if looking ahead for some years...so that still means either the e90 or C...because i like the size and handling of something in this class and anything more would also be "over-status" for me. Plus, my physique is not that big so i might look a bit funny with a bigger car lah..! Cars nowadays are really getting bigger and bigger!!

*Disclaimer: I am not saying must be fat or big to drive 5/7/E/S etc...!!! just personal preference no offence guys...

as for the need for a car with more space at times, i can interchange with a family member whose car got more cabin space...still living together so it's convenient in this case...

ultimately still boils down to heart vs. mind..the clock is ticking..! but i perfectly understand why you act blur when your wife complains =)
