There is just no dignity for the aged in Singapore ....
95yr old who took own life over medical bills was the Samsui woman highlighted in 2007 NDR | The Real Singapore
The tragic story of 95 year old Lu Dai Hao came to light in September after the elderly lady took her own life due to not wanting to burden her family with her medical costs.
Lu Dai Hao had come to Singapore when she was around 18 years old and became a samsui woman after getting married.
It turns out that the lady was the Samsui woman who PM Lee had highlighted in the 2007 National day celebrations:

She was originally from Canton South but worked in Singapore for 42 years carrying bricks and sand around the construction sites in Singapore.
After she retired from that job, she helped her family to look after the children while working as a coffeeshop assistant managing odd jobs.
It was her children that convinced her to retire from this job after another 20 years as they were concerned about her safety and wellbeing.
However, Lu Dai Hao was very active and even in retirement, she often went out and caught buses and trains to do her shopping and everything.
She never had any real complaints and she was cheerful and quite healthy. Her family had never expected her to take her own life.
In July this year, she had fallen at her home and had subsequently needed to be hospitalised for 3 weeks.
Shortly afterward, she had fallen to her death. Her family believes that it was because she didn’t want to burden her children with more medical costs in future.
Her daughter, Fend Lun Ping, a 50 year old accountant said that her mother was a samsui woman who worked long without complaint. She explained how even her choice to take her life was for the sake of the family.
Lu Dai Hao, passed away on the 11th of September 2013 at around 5:30 pm.
In addition to the rising medical cost in Singapore, till now, there is no social safety net set up by the PAP government and the burden of healthcare would be instead passed from parents to their children.
