523i experience with 17" or 18" rims

hi, I'm thinking of switching rims, but would like to hear the views of current owners of the 523i experience with the current rims, pros and cons, and what they would recommend.

I'm enticed by 18" but fear that it would be too much of a strain on the 523i. appreciate some feedback.

Thanks in advance.

18 is perfectly fine for 5 er...in fact it looks good.
No stress nor anything.

I happened to be at Leong Seng tire shop recently and saw one of my fav rims
Oz Superleggera III ( forged center ) for 5 series. It's 18in, nice deep dish, light and strong but aint cheap

Here is how it looks like

Spreading your mod virus everywhere huh?

Re: 523i experience with 17" or 18" rims

definitely be weight penalty if u change bigger...but then sometimes the looks factor means a lot more. anything less than 18 on the 5 will look undersized. anyway its a family saloon...changing to 18 n using ps2...still lighter than using 17 n RFs....

there r some aftermarkets forged that r lighter. if u use the 18 styling 124s...they r 11.33kg. use that as a guide.

Re: 523i experience with 17" or 18" rims

thanks for the quick responses ...agree that there's plenty of body metal from the side view, so the 17" looks just nice, 18" more aggressive.

I'm less concerned about top speed, but more on "low end torque", "initial inertia" and "rolling resistance" that may compromise zippy urban driving.

not sure about how the 523i fares in this area, but my ex-passat 1.8T didn't do so well here so I capped it at 17" (of course once thechiped ecu and turbo kicked in ....:nehnehhh: )

I guess the true test of "strain" on the engine would be mileage inefficiencies - any experience on 523is with 18" reporting relatively decent fuel economy ?

I just traded in my 18"s for 19"s, if you keen to get a used one to try, you can go to Lee Beng@ AMK. I have no problems with either of them.

Sorry! OT little bit ....Wah Scud, you really into modding your e60 now huh? What's next... Interested in Exhaust?

I am on 19" and, quite frankly dont see much difference in feul economy. 523 on stock 17" and runflat is already a guzzler so a couple of inches more wont make much diff.... keke

BZ, thinking of keeping the car for another year, so just do something to keep the interest going. You have kang tou for exhaust? I am thinking more on a bodykit.

Re: 523i experience with 17" or 18" rims

hi... am surprised u didnt go for the 18" especially for the passat...especially after u chipped it up. my previous B5.5 was on 18" Oettingers... dont think will loose out if it was on a 17" set up... like u said when the extra 50++bhp kicks in... :woowooo:

but i'm sure u will feel the difference now when u change from a 17" to a 18" on ur 523... sop. but dont worry... u of all people will understand when i say the driving experience/sensation is much more enjoyable than the previous.

u should consult more from toto.... especially on modding up ur 5... check out his MODDED supped up 530!!! :yikess:

Re: 523i experience with 17" or 18" rims

no la..pete..my car not that modded. inertia defintely have...nothing to do wif top speeds...well u corner better...also like i mentioned junked those RFs buy normal tires...ur weight per wheel comes back to square 1. the RFs r heavy...just do it...

Re: 523i experience with 17" or 18" rims

yeah... i'm going to intesively research totoseow's posts from now on :)

on the passat, there's a gap between idle to when turbo kicks in. that's where most of the inertia and weight penalty would be felt when it was only a 1.8 - before the T(urbo) kicked in. I was trying to avoid that Jack-rabbit starts, which would be made worse in traffic. Hence i stayed on 17".

it was the combination of rear-power and active chassis (dynamic drive) of the BMW that won my heart instantly, now i know what I have been missing. thought 177 hps sounds a tad light (its all i could affort) I'm counting on that new R6 to deliver on the early part of the torque curve....17"...18"" :yummie:
