520 (E60) vs 320 (E90) - Straightline Sprint

Re: 520 (E60) vs 320 (E90) - Straightline Sprint

520i is a 2.2L but heavier car, 320i is 2.0L.. I think about the same...

+ whatever stuffs one has in the trunk.
Golf clubs can be heavy and quite a few people practically keep their clubs in the trunk :lol2:

Re: 520 (E60) vs 320 (E90) - Straightline Sprint

First 0-100 km/h, the E90 320i will probably lead.

E60 is a heavier car and its IL-6 engine has got a higher moment of inertia (i.e., more mass to begin turning and more linkages). Compared to the E90's IL-4, one may even sense a split-second hesitation when you floor the E60's pedal, vs a more-instantaneous response from the 4-potter.

However, up to the quarter mile and beyond, I think the E60's higher displacement will have the edge in the long haul.

Re: 520 (E60) vs 320 (E90) - Straightline Sprint

this has been tried by 2 people i know...both complete stock..320 leads to 70-80km/h at max before the 520 closes in and goes from there...

E83_X3 is right in that there is a clear lag in throttle response/lag time for the initial pick-up..you can instantaneously see the 320 lurch forward before the 520 even reacts in the first moments...this was tried 2 times each with drivers exchanging cars to give a fair comparison of reaction time as well...city driving wise...quite confrim 320 will edge the 520 over short distances and start/stop traffic up to maybe 60km/h speeds..even the 523 has discernible lag next to a 320 on immediate pick-up at the lights..this has been repeatedly experienced..

Re: 520 (E60) vs 320 (E90) - Straightline Sprint

That split-second hesitation on flooring the pedal was very obvious, from the many test drives I did on the early E60 520i (2.2L) and even in the E39 520i model before that, using the same 2.2L M52B20 engine. Did not like it.

Good that it has been discontinued.

I don't recall the E39 with 2.0L M52B20 engine having had this hesitation.

This hesitation issue has been complained about in all Bosch Motronics for V6 and I6 engines. Merc E240, E300, E320, E350 drivers have been complaining like forever. I would take the lag as a Bosch 2001 release software problem rather than a BMW-specific issue.
