335 vs GTR --> opinions pls

Dear Bros,

Been thinking about this for months now and will probably take the plunge sometime soon.

Initially the 630 or X6 was my better half's preferred choice but I managed to convinced her that the back seats of the 335 is roomier and the 6 was kinda sluggish (6 drivers forgive me) As for the GTR, well it has a bigger boot! :laughlik: The X6 is cool but I wasn't sure how the resale market would look like.

It's a pretty difficult decision to make (a good problem admitedly) as I like both cars very much but obviously cannot afford to buy both. This time I plan to hold on to the car for about 2+ years, longer than my usual time frame. I need a 2+2 as well just in case baby seats come into play...:)

I believe the running cost for the GTR would be higher than the 335 given its 3.8 vs 3.0 ltr for one. Ditto for insurance. And I know the GTR's LSD(?) oil change at 10,000km mark can be a killer. But otherwise, I think the routine servicing costs are fairly similar btw the 2? Bros who know better feel free to correct me.

What about resale values for both cars? My wife's major concern is that the GTR is too niche making it potentially difficult to sell for a fair price later on...hence the 335 is a 'safer' buy in her opinion.

Appreciate your thoughts.

Cheers,
B

Dun forget fuel consumption too

Re: 335 vs GTR --> opinions pls

My children, 3 and 6, sleeps soundly in the 335i. I think GTR is more performance oriented and may be a tad noisy for baby.

Re: 335 vs GTR --> opinions pls

As you said back seats are a concern, 335 has alot of space for any coupes...
Resale... I think both cars will take the same hit in terms of monetary value, not percentage.
I dont think GTR is niche actually! So many on the roads!!
OT : Seen only one 335 in korea so far, and zero GTRs
Oil change at PML less than $300, spare parts should be alot cheaper too.
Well just based on what you initially posted, i think 335 is a better option, unless you mentioned the agonizing need for power ;)
But for your baby, keep the car stock... stock is best :silenced:

I think if I were you, I would get an M3 4 Door, retains better value, M Pedigree and a very fast Saloon. Or the 335i. Yeah the GTR is fast but to me I feel I would rather go for something slower with a better Pedigree. NO offence to GTR owners. This is just my own views.

Re: 335 vs GTR --> opinions pls

Thanks for the comments.

The M3 4-door is interesting but no used models now I think. However, I would imagine the next m3 buyer would prefer the car in its coupe form? (thus limiting its appeal in the resale market)

I'm also thinking that, at the M3 price point, I would prefer to go for a cheap ppl carrier + selfish sports car model.

Get E92 335i..becoz (1) more good looking than GTR and X6..(2) i heard GTR maintenance cost is quite high..(3) a lot of mods available for 335i..(4) 335 rear is big (my in-laws nearly killed me for getting 2-doors..i was forgiven after selling the point that the rear is roomy..they agreed..phew..)

both 335 and GTR are niche cars..i agreed 335 is a safer bet..

Finally, try to test drive all your choices if possible..either borrow from existing owners or other means..

Good luck!

Re: 335 vs GTR --> opinions pls

Sigh...of course you found the 6er to be sluggish...hiaz, tick "bigger engine" option? Perhaps that would help? Hiaz...

Re: 335 vs GTR --> opinions pls

Get a 335 convertible. I have a 2 year old and it is a heck of a lot easier to get the kid into the car and locked down into the baby seat with the roof down sometimes. especially in narrow carparks when I cannot open the front doors properly. Just speaking from experience...

Re: 335 vs GTR --> opinions pls

Bros,

Thanks for the all comments, especially great to hear from those with kids! I am actually considering the 335 cab as opposed to the coupe for the 335 model.

Camelot,

Is it easy to put baby seats at the back? Even if reversed position? Would love to hear your comments on how easy is the cab with the kid factor in play.

ACS6,

No offence mate LOL, I know you have a beautiful 6! But the roadtax on a 650 doesnt make financial sense to me.

Cheers,
B

Re: 335 vs GTR --> opinions pls

GTR

+ smooth, blistering quick, easy to drive (considering the power)
- maintenance costs (gearbox oil change per 10,000 km $1,600), 20" runflats per tyre is $1,300 (cost of one rim !!!), suspected gearbox issue if launch too often

335

+ smooth, quick on stock, blistering quick if chipped
- handling aspects not comparable to the GTR

Decision is simple. GTR if used as second car. 335 if it is only daily car.

Hi,

Its real easy with a cab. Just stow the roof when you need to insert or remove the child seat and there is zero obstruction. Can't do that on a coupe, hence my decision to go with a cab. I am using the standard BMW isofix childseat which locks solidly into the 2 ISOFIX slots in the back seat, so I feel pretty safe with the little one back there. It also has a high back which augments and does not obstruct the rollover bar. I use the child seat in a front facing not reversed position as my son is already 2 years old but you can use a reverse facing seat as well. Once the kid is in the child seat, I prefer to drive with the roof up to be on the safe side except for short slow rides along the service road at east coast in the evenings.
