hi all,

I can't seem to find much info online for the 318is coupe.

can the dear drivers bros of this series advise me on the following:

1.fuel consumption
2. 0-100km sprint spec

i know that its 140bhp for the M42 engine thats all.

which are the problems that you all have faced for the pre 1995 series.

many thanks in advance.:)

Re: 318is coupe

i am enjoying my iS coupe (manual) for last 4.5yrs, very reliable ! hit milleage of 350,000km yet going tough. Low maintenance. Alot of things to mod if you got the S11 :yummie:
i rev my car everyday on pick up.. setting the shift light at 6000rpm.. but drive within road limit after pick up haha :lol2: ... left 12 points :furious: Good cornering feel & handling. Average 510km for 50litres.
Last top speed, PIE 210km/hr @5am :screwedu:
if you buying one, u either love it or hate it !

Re: 318is coupe

Yes, the M42 16V engine is stellar...mine's at 270K and still very strong. Lots of fun at the N-S hywy. Cheapest ticket to 200kmh!

Hi bro, thanks for your proactive replies.

what is the S11, which is the year which your ride is registered? yes, im thinking of getting a
318is. currently driving a one year old vios manual. like the handling of a beemer. but now is pretty busy to source for one. so far have only seen one at the sgcarmart with COE till 09/2011.

510km for 50L is really good! which grade of petrol are you on? 98 or 95 octane? what is your driving style, as it how many % highway and city? i suppose 510km would be for highways right? :) fuel economy is particular concern for me as i am on raods most of the times and monthly milege can reach 3k.

210kmh on PIE is madness! you have got guts man!!! :woowooo:

so far what are the problem have you faced? i have read on the forum before for 65k to 130k there are problems with the gasket and coolant leakages. but i suppose since this is a high milage ride at this poitn of time, the problems will be over. am i right to say that?

any bros have a coupe with a sunroof installed? will if affect the insurance premium?

i noticed that for 318is test driven one before, have to rev pretty high to abt 4k, other wse the pickup is pretty slow. am i right to say that?

please feel free to add on to me and correct any mistaken points.

many thanks!

Hi bro, thanks for your proactive replies.

S11 - $$$$$$
My ride registered - 1993
Only use SHELL 98
Driving style - Rev during pick up & maintain normal
Highway 60% City 40%
Monthly milleage from 2000km - 4000km, depends on work load.
210kmh on PIE - Young, single & bo chiap.. did many times, use to go back 5am very often.
Problem have you faced - as long you feel something not right, look for ur mechanic, usually low cost but if you delay then prepare to spend more.

Casket and coolant leakages- Just get new seal - my engine cannot find oil stains.
I change all new hoses - no more worries.
At BVO, all fuel hose only $250
Radiator hose $70, cooling hose & conector $44, vent hose $20 etc.
Things are cheap if you rectify early & it will last you another 10yrs.
sunroof - try be stocks, cutting one may weaken the framework - my thinking.
I pay $700 insurance for 50% on my coupe exclude rebates haha

Have to rev pretty high to abt 4k - I usually rev 6K :) & easily achieve cos that e beauty of this ride.
Anyway is more than 14yrs so just take good care, wear & tear is main concern, some money have to spend.
So far never fail to start & break down on road past 4.5yrs since i own it.

bro, i using bigger air filter & broquet fuel booster, but the main setup is backside itcy spend $$$ did cylinder head porting, refacing and polishing of the 16 valves! :woottt: polish till can see my teeth  .. hence now power increase, fuel drop, use to be 8.5km/litre but now hardly drop below 10km/litre.. if u dun drive like me shld hit 12km/litre, i always change gear above 3000rpm minimum...

btw the modified bill sucks..:fineprin:
but long term u save 20% petrol , more power , worth la :)
just my humble ride photo.. interior & engine..

Re: 318is coupe

nothing much have been done esp. cleaning :) but once a while use a wet cloth wipe.. always maintain engine no oil leak. besides tat exterior i find that old E36 paint work, leather, interior more solid.. exterior & interior only polish 4 times in past 4.5yrs, why i rem cos only during Chinese NY.. but wash once every 2 week at petrol station.

Re: 318is coupe

haha....ur IS have reach 350k km but see the condition so good leh ;) So when u going to consider letting it go bro???? :p

how much did it take you to convert all of the abovementioned items said by you? went to the e36coupe.com forum and found out that the is coupe is a rather peppy engine, this looks really tempting to get it!please let me know how much it cost you for the above setup.:) thanks

hi bro. your insurance premium is pretty good and cheap! 2 years before i bought my vios ride, i checked the insurance premium for mazda mx5 convertible. "convertible" is considered as a "high performance" car and my premium is $3000+ without NCD (2years ago). :yikess: :yikess:

if im not mistaken, there will be 3 forms of classification for car inusrance, correct me if im wrong. probably this only applies to ntuc income: normal, sports car, turbo and high performance.

bro, do you know hoiw they classify the IS coupe? i read somewhere in this forum that 2 dr cars command much significant premium, or simply have more expensive insurance than a 4 dr sedan.

bro, besides this, do you have a workshop where you know the pple well. i do have my uncle's workshop but i never dared to go to him if i were to drive a continential car. he is the kind that wil "chop" me like mad when he thinks that im rich:lol2:

Re: 318is coupe

there was a period when my good friend let me her 330CI coupe went she went overseas for a whole 2 months. if only the transmission is manual. but i loved the car and the stares which it attracted!!! haha. a very responsive 6 potter indeed!

eversince i began to like beemers. i could still remember 1 year plus when i was at the holland village, i saw a chilli red 318is coupe. i did not know that it was an IS then but i liked it immidiately when i saw it! eversince i have been taking notice of beemers.

originally i wanted to go for the e46 coupe because i have read reviews in contrast with e36. in my humble opinion, it seems to me that the reviews and including my car Xiao frens say that e36 engines is not as reliable as the e46 vanos engine.

tot of getting a e46 coupe a few years down the road when im older. however, the sight of chilli red 318is has never left my mind. did not know why, despite its old school looks, it still appealed to me tremendously. i found it to be "very fierce" and aggressive car. i thought abt it. it did not really make sense to me to spend too much on a car which will get me from point to point. a 320 e46 coupe will have a depreciation in excces of 10k+ per annum. i did not really make sense since i needed the $ for business. imho, e36 probably be better with its much lower deprecation. i worked out the deprecation for vios and realised that it could actually depreciate more than a COE beemer!

The only complain that think i have will be the plasticy interior of the e36 and the lack of air bags. im pretty surprised at the quality of e36 from beemer.

bro, just o chekc with you again what will be the market deprecaition for a 318is. what is a resonable price i should pay for a 92 or 93 IS coupe.Maybe one day i should find time to join you all at the meet ups to ask more qns.

thanks
