2nd time I had to jam brake at Commonwealth Ave near Clementi

This junction is a potential accident junction. This is the second time I did not realize that the red light was for a line that's way BEFORE the traffic light junction. At the same time I also realize that the new E90s have auto hazard light when ABS is activated.

Anyway, look at the photo... let me explain...

Look at the YELLOW arrow. That is the line where I always THOUGHT I have to stop because it is nearer to the traffic light indicated by the RED arrow. But no, that is just a pedestrian crossing!

There's also two other lights at the side indicated by the BLUE arrows. The one on the left is potentially blocked by a bus in the bus bay. The one on the right is hidden under the MRT behind the fences.

Then notice the GREEN arrow. That is the line where you ACTUALLY need to stop. Notice how it cuts the bus bay?

The RED arrow points at the overhead traffic light... this is the light that most drivers will notice first. It is TOO FAR from the stop line!

Now if you miss this stop line, you will likely get into a big accident by a car entering from the filter lane on the right... which is quite hidden away because of the entry angle.

Seriously, I think I need to write to LTA regarding this.

U r right, it's very complicated. LTA will say yellow box anyway so u need to stay behind since the yellow line is the end of the yellow box. But then the damn traffic light is at a place without any stoppage line. I believe LTA gave this project to FT and he/she anyhow draw

Re: 2nd time I had to jam brake at Commonwealth Ave near Clementi

the problem lies with them trying to do a filter road on the right.
if don't have that, they can draw the white line where the pedestrian crossing is.
they know singaporean won't give a damn abt giving way to roads from that fiter road so they probably timed it with the lights so when when it turns red, u guys are supposed to stop well before that yellow box, then the guys from the small filter road have some chance to come in.

so moral of the story is....problem is who is the small aleck who went to provide the filter lane.
probably to please the residents or users there so that they don't need to drive up almost up to toh guan to u-turn bah

Re: 2nd time I had to jam brake at Commonwealth Ave near Clementi

This is indeed confusing.

Re: 2nd time I had to jam brake at Commonwealth Ave near Clementi

i think they should just shift the overhead traffic light towards the stop line.

Re: 2nd time I had to jam brake at Commonwealth Ave near Clementi

Dear LTA,

I would like to bring to your attention the following traffic light along Commonwealth Ave West.

I have been caught off guard at least twice at this junction by the traffic lights, especially the overhead traffic light indicated by the red arrow.

The overhead traffic light is too far away from the intended stop line (stop line indicated by green arrow).

Furthermore the two additional traffic lights indicated by the blue arrows are either out of sight or not very obvious. The left one can be blocked by a bus exiting the bus bay, and the right one hides behind a fence.

Note also, the yellow arrow points at a white line that's easily mistaken for the stop line since it sits between the traffic lights. That is actually a pedestrian crossing.

Note the photo was downloaded from Google Maps, which is taken at a much higher height than normal cars' view.

When seated in the height of a regular passenger car, cars filtering into the main road from Jln Lempeng cannot be seen due to the angle of approach. The MRT pillars and fences also block the view of oncoming cars for those exiting Jln Lempeng.

On top of that this traffic junction has many students crossing from Pei Tong Primary just across the road. The bad design of this junction worries me even more.

Suggestions:
1) Reduce confusion - Move the traffic lights indicated by the red and blue arrows nearer to the stop lines.
2) Improve visibility for cars exiting Jln Lempeng - Shorten the fences so it ends at the stop line instead.
3) Make the stop line more obvious - Reduce the size of the yellow box, leaving more space between the stop line and yellow box
4) Prevent cars exiting Jln Lempeng from missing a pedestrian. The "A" pillars of cars can easily block the view of a pedestrian due to the angle at which the car filters into the road. Move the padestrian crossing towards the stop line instead.

Please review my suggestions as I believe it will help improve the safety of our roads.

Thank you.

Best Regards,
Justin Lee

it does look complicated but so far i've travelled this road, no problem for me at all.......
of course can improve it, will be better as different driver might have a different view when driving on the road......

cheers

Wrote to LTA, and they have replied today.

Possible accident area, suggestions for improvement (SW-Clementi)
Feedback Ref:20110802-0192

I refer to your feedback dated 2 Aug 2011. We have examined the traffic situation at the junction of Commonwealth Avenue West/Jalan Lempeng for further improvement.

From our site check, there are 2 primary and 1 secondary traffic signals to guide motorists approaching the junction on Commonwealth Avenue West. Their positions are satisfactory and motorists can observe the traffic indication from a distance. In addition, the "Stop" line is 300mm wide. It is sufficient to alert motorists of its presence although a yellow box has been painted immediately after it, which is quite typical at a junction.

To enhance safety of pedestrians, we will lower a section of the railings before the pedestrian crossing. This will allow motorists a better view of pedestrians, especially school children waiting to cross the road.

We thank you for your feedback and appreciate your concern for road safety.

Good to hear that they have at least done something to improve visibility.

Re: 2nd time I had to jam brake at Commonwealth Ave near Clementi

You gave me an idea. Have been writingbto Nparks on their landscaping overkill at certain junctions that makes traffic lights unsighted or pedestrians crossing road unsighted until you make tge turns. For some tgey end up trimming but some gave me standard answers re hedge is still low etc.

Maybe write to LTA next.

Can anymore see the traffic lights on the centre of nicholl highway junction near suntec? Heading towards esplanade direction. Sorry to OT your thread.
