2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STi - Is It The Real Deal?

No, we’re not even close in finishing our reports on the Frankfurt Show, but we had to take a break once we saw these scanned images from a Japanese car magazine called “Best Car”. We’ll agree completely with the guys at Insideline that although Japanese mags are notorious for their photoshop work, these ones could be revealing the real thing. The magazine also talks about a 300 Hp output and a maximum torque of 45,9 kgm for the new Impreza WRX STi.

*dun really think its THAT Mazda 3-ish, but personally i feel it has a stance like the Alfa 147 GTA which isn't too bad*

Not that ugly for a hatch but wish they kept the sedan shape instead. hatch is just.... so NOT a WRX...

Re: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI?

Yup. that's the real deal as the spy pictures have shown...gunning for the title of 'hottest hatch ever'.

So we are left with a dilemma, the first official teaser shot of the New Subaru WRX STi turns up on the web (courtesy of our friends over at Test Page for Apache Installation, see on the right) on the same day we get the most revealing spy shots from Nurburgring. In true WCF fashion we hold nothing back, so here you are all in one go.

Subaru have taken a great deal of care to keep the STi under wraps as we can see in the photos, the covers were kept on right up until the protype reached their workshop outside of the Nürburgring.

Fortunately soon after the covers were off and we can see an extremely clean STi prototype circling the Nürburgring, revealing all of the new Subaru's hottest design points. Prior prototypes were still heavily taped, and had padding stuffed around the fender flares.

Now we can see the true shape of the STi's bulging fenders, and the large air duct integrated into the side of the front bumper. The front intakes have some thin tape covering the nose slats, but the shapes that lay behind are still completely visible.

Seeing the WRX STi's more aggressive bodywork so clearly now, we can see Subaru are in a strong position to do battle with Mitsubishi's slick new EvoX. Keep an eye out over the next few days and weeks leading up it's debut in Tokyo as further official details are released.

Re: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI?

Is Subaru trying to appeal to the hot hatch market? They're going to be in for a fight since the Golf GTI is very well-entrenched in this market segment.

hmmm... possible to beat GOLF becos it may cost only 3/4 of the GOLF price?

Re: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI?

Based on MY07 STI and GTI pricing, STI is PRICIER.

I understand they have taken out basic WRX from some markets. Not sure if SG is one of them.

Re: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI?

They are losing their touch. What happened to the good old "Ugliest Car in the World, if not the Universe" design principles? Come on, they will be banning 5-foot-high spoilers next! But at least they have stuck to having 4 doors, just to ensure some residual repulsiveness....and after all, the basics are still there: you could put a 600 hp motor into that thing and I *still* don't want one!

Re: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI?

i like it! looks very mission-focused....better than some of their funny nose designs.

Actually Subaru was never known for its designs. For its new nose, they are redesigning it.

Problem with Subaru, if it is indeed a problem, is that Engineers, not bean counters, rule the company. Therefore this car has the best suspension, transmission, etc for the money, but a design so bland it is 10 years outta date.

Don't quite agree... till today the base WRX has a gearbox that's said to be made of glass. Shift quality is nowhere near Honda.

This is the STI, not the base WRX.

The STI's primary advantage would be the paper specs on power. Mk V Golf has DSG and better interior, which would seem greater value for money. Looks-wise, I'd take the GTI.

Re: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI?

the reason the WRX looks like this is exactly the result of the bean counters.
they wanted to appeal more to the mainstream (read, plain), hence the hatchback design
.
designed to appeal to the general buying car public and less to the boy-racers.
that's what Subaru themselves wanted.

There's really no excuse for Subaru's bland ugly designs. Look at the upcoming EVO X. that car looks like it's ready to chew up the new WRX,even the STi.
And probably expect Subaru to do a hasty 'update' to this design in a year's time

Re: 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX STI?

the EVO X is definately look better than the STi

though i own the MY06, oppss..
