2 way car alarm with remote start --> recommendations ?

Firstly, nice forum guys. I see lots of useful help and recommendations given here.

Also, a new guy feels very welcome when he joins....

So, I have an antique 1990 BMW 520i E34.

It currently has no alarm or immobiliser, and am looking to get a 2 way alarm installed with remote start.

I agree with other comments on other posts that car alarms can be very annoying if they go off, so at least with the 2 way system you can set it to "quiet mode" where it doesn't sound the alarm but beeps your 2 way to (hopefully) wake you up so you can rush out in your boxers to save your car.

I've had multiple offers to sell me the alarm, but no one has came with a sensible offer to fit it. I don't particularly want to buy the alarm off guy X, then get it installed by guy Y, for the obvious reason that if anything goes wrong, they'll blame each other and not fix it.

Any advice welcomed

I think I have installed something similar to what you have described, and about the annoying bits, I fashioned the 'alarm' inside my cabin instead of the usual engine hood area... well it's supposed to irritate the hell out of a would be car thief than innocent neighbours... no?

Well, it was all good, it starts the engine and off it remotely. After less than 2 months, doesn't start remotely and need to go back to reset. Each reset than lasted less than 1 week. About half year down the line, engine does not start and subsequently, I was told to work the remote control in a peculiar pattern to set things back to 'default' before engine can be started with my key. The remote engine cut thingy must have been interferring and cut out my ignition supply.

I don't know if the set was incompatible or the installation, and the guy who did the installation has quited. Now, those engine thingy functions are all disabled and I am a much happier man with just the normal remote locking feature. Oh.. the plus point is the distant I can lock / unlock the car.. without line of sight.

My 2 cents.

Thanks for the feedback.

In theory I guess there is some risk involved, as the system is quite complex, but it's one of these things I just have to try :)

I had a system on my car in the UK 10 years ago !! (must have been almost one of the first 2 way to come out) and glad to say it worked fine all the time I had it, even starting the car in very cold/freezing weather.

I found a supplier today who could recommend an installer, and the installer has asked me to drop by for him to do some checks on the car before we start, to make sure it's going to work properly, so fingers crossed.

I'll post back here as things progress.
