I have a set of genuine SSR Type-Fs in exclusive BMW ///M fitment
These FORGED wheels weigh a mere 9kg each,
compared to stock BMW Competition Style 359 wheels
(cast) which weigh approximately 12kgs on each
corner. That's a combined unsprung weight savings
of 12kg!! A perfect combination...

Really depends, for the most part it's for aesthetics.
But also applies for:-
i) rectify wheel offsets like you mentioned
ii) clear bbk/ suspension components
iii) increase track width ( improve handling & optimize rolling) - in the case of racecars...

PD is pretty safe I would say, but then you can't be too careful these days, I would be reluctant too to drive into unfamiliar territories, especially if I'm travelling alone
