Decoding BMW’s OS 8.5: Choosing the Right Head Unit

BMW’s latest Operating System 8.5 enhances user interactions with its QuickSelect feature. This system only works with cars with the Head Unit High 5 (MGU 22), powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. Sadly, upgrading Head Unit High 4 vehicles to OS 8.5 isn’t an option.

This refreshed infotainment system brings multiple upgrades, such as widget relocation, a revamped climate control interface, modified seat and steering heating operations, and quicker data access. Widgets now sit on the screen’s left, in the QuickSelect Menu, enhancing the Home Screen’s appeal. Users can now shift widgets up or down to get more information without affecting the display’s view.

Widgets offer more valuable data across multiple pages, accessible with a simple swipe left or right. A line at the window’s bottom shows the number of available pages per widget.

Customers can choose from various Home Screen displays like Media, My Modes, Navigation, and more. Users can update stage information via a selection banner, pulling a menu from the screen’s right side.

Despite new QuickSelect features, customers can smoothly transition from BMW Operating System 8 to 8.5. The Climate Control interface got an intuitive makeover. Changes also extend to the steering wheel and seat heating. Users can activate the classic three heat levels by clicking seat icons on the menu, triggering a small pop-up. Notably, this function is accessible from all menus, not just climate.

Customers buying an M vehicle with the Head Unit High 5 get a unique home screen reflecting the M style. The BMW Operating System 8.5 M boasts an exclusive widget layout with angled elements. The climate control and other features remain consistent with OS 8.5, thanks to QuickSelect.
