Convertible electric scooter with airbags patented by BMW

Apparently, a new breed of scooter has been filed for patent by BMW. They have been making motorcycles for longer than they were engaged in the car production industry. That experience definitely earned them a respected name in the business. Over the years, BMW has made various scooters, and the most modern one being the electric scooter- the C Evolution model.

But BMW is earnest in looking for a more revolutionary approach as the electric appears to be an old-fashion now. And as per Cycle World, BMW has recently filed a patent for a sort of convertible model which can be used with or without a roof.

Furthermore, the new scooter seems to have some serious safety features to keep riders safe especially when the roof is up. Taking into account the powerful lateral gusts of wind that might tip you over. Imagine riding on just two wheels and have a large area acting as a sail against you. Well, BMW has already thought of a solution for that.

In addition, active aerodynamics seems to be indicated in the patent. It comes with a fundamental four movable small wings- two at the front and two at the back. They are controlled accordingly to create downforce while being connected to the scooter’s ECU. Moreover, consisting with high technology, its computer can already adjust them to tilt the scooter and offset against side winds.

Not only rear impact protection and crumple zones are included but also side airbags are seemed to join in the mix. The roof is made of carbon fiber and is also detachable. As it is electric, heavy batteries are expected. But it was built to be as light as possible to compensate that.

With that said, it somehow resembles a combination between the C Evolution and original C1 which was also designed to be a safe and secure model. Unfortunately, the 15 HP engine could barely cope with the weight it had to carry around. With the carbon fiber and aluminum chassis, we are hopeful the new model will rise to the expectations.
